Re: Expansion tank return hose 2002 9N 1.4
Thanks for your help with the part number. The part seems to be an assembly rather than just the section of the hose I need. Whilst the hose has some bends that probably help absorb vibration I think over 22 years the flex has worn the bore where it fixes to the expansion tank. When I drain the cool...

Re: ATF auto transmission fluid change
Just adding that I have used Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres over the last two sets (including current). Whilst I have only recently achieved the very good mpg figures after the ATF work, it might be that the tyres are a factor. In any case, I find that the tyres suit the car well and they are quiet. ...

Re: ATF auto transmission fluid change
That could work but you need to calculate/approximate the volumes/level to ensure a proper fill. I found that a repeat a few hundred miles later (where I did use drain/measure/fill) helped get the old fluid out of the torque converter. I found a very minor breach on the sump pan gasket/sealing which...

Re: Old VW antics
49.52mpg recorded on 260 mile round trip at highway speeds. A shame it didn't get to 50!
On setting out in the car after it has been sitting in the sun at 16C the rear fog lamp illuminates with the side lamps. After driving a short distance, the fog lamp extinguishes.

Re: ATF auto transmission fluid change
I would recommend to drain and refill with fresh ATF (I used Febi brand) , measuring the quantity that drains to check for any losses, and using the correct method to fill to the correct level at the specified temp range. Probably not worth changing the strainer as it is unlikely to be clogged. Howe...

Re: Old VW antics
I read somewhere that Bosch and Varta batteries are made in the same factory, though I don't know if that is true or pertains to a particular location. I replaced an old Varta that appeared to have failed in my other vehicle last year and eventually was able to get some life out it after putting it ...

Re: Old VW antics
Back at 45mpg with no DTCs other than the A/C. I added a top up can to the A/C with a leak detector but could not see any indications of a leak. The pressure has dropped again so no A/C. Not sure if it's worth a proper regas - it might last a while longer though before losing pressure. I fitted a ne...

Re: Front discs and pads
Thanks for the timely resurrection... I have been increasingly reluctant to do work on my old Polo but even more dread work growing into a saga. With the weather improving, I might have a look at the rear brakes over summer. I replaced all rear calipers, lines, pads, etc. last time, and suppose I sh...

Re: MK4 polo failed to connect/communicate with ECU
can you confirm which scanners exactly you have used and are they known to be good (i.e. work on another VAG vehicle)? only time I had a problem was a cheap product with a cable issue. are you sure the shift lock is working/releasing correctly (is there a click when on the brake pedal)?

Re: MK4 polo failed to connect/communicate with ECU
what engine is that and what is the odometer reading?
not sure if it might be worth a try to disconnect the battery and reset the ECU?

Re: Old VW antics
Thankfully, DTC 17584 has not returned. I calculated the mpg at 36.5 (urban 100%) and would have expected at least 40 and nearer 44 if all was well. I've driven the Polo for over 100,000 miles now and notice how the fuel gauge moves. I put the battery on a smart charge and noticed it was down on vol...

Re: Tyes
Whilst the wheels/tyres will fit you still need to inform your insurer as this is a non-factory fit.

Re: Tyes
Not sure why you would want to do that. What do you hope to gain? The standard tyres are good enough and help return better mpg. You would also have to inform the insurance company of any non-standard change else your policy could be voided, leaving you in a legal predicament. FWIW I use Goodyear Ef...
