Re: Old VW antics

Back at 45mpg with no DTCs other than the A/C. I added a top up can to the A/C with a leak detector but could not see any indications of a leak. The pressure has dropped again so no A/C. Not sure if it's worth a proper regas - it might last a while longer though before losing pressure. I fitted a ne...

Re: Front discs and pads

Thanks for the timely resurrection... I have been increasingly reluctant to do work on my old Polo but even more dread work growing into a saga. With the weather improving, I might have a look at the rear brakes over summer. I replaced all rear calipers, lines, pads, etc. last time, and suppose I sh...

Re: MK4 polo failed to connect/communicate with ECU

can you confirm which scanners exactly you have used and are they known to be good (i.e. work on another VAG vehicle)? only time I had a problem was a cheap product with a cable issue. are you sure the shift lock is working/releasing correctly (is there a click when on the brake pedal)?

Re: MK4 polo failed to connect/communicate with ECU

what engine is that and what is the odometer reading?

not sure if it might be worth a try to disconnect the battery and reset the ECU?

Re: Old VW antics

Thankfully, DTC 17584 has not returned. I calculated the mpg at 36.5 (urban 100%) and would have expected at least 40 and nearer 44 if all was well. I've driven the Polo for over 100,000 miles now and notice how the fuel gauge moves. I put the battery on a smart charge and noticed it was down on vol...

Re: Tyes

Whilst the wheels/tyres will fit you still need to inform your insurer as this is a non-factory fit.

Re: Tyes

Not sure why you would want to do that. What do you hope to gain? The standard tyres are good enough and help return better mpg. You would also have to inform the insurance company of any non-standard change else your policy could be voided, leaving you in a legal predicament. FWIW I use Goodyear Ef...

Re: Offside dipped headlight bulb replacement

They always seem to fail in poor weather. My n/s side lamp failed just before the xmas holiday. Not wanting to get my hands cold I went to Halfords and paid for the service. The 'long life' bulb failed a few weeks ago and they were good enough to replace it foc.

Re: Old VW antics

I've reset the DTCs and the engine check light has not yet returned. I suppose I should scan to see if the code has returned. Otherwise, I noticed that fuel consumption had increased. I'm hoping that will return to the very good 44-48mpg I'm achieving.

I had this problem on a 1.4 a few years back. I purchased a replacement wire harness of eBay and fitted that.

Re: Water leak into boot/rear seat

How much water is entering the cabin? The only 'large flood' I experienced was through the rear wiper fitting but that is nowhere near your wet patch?

Re: Old VW antics

During recent very wet weather on starting from cold DTC 17584 appeared. The reader also showed 18049 which has been indicated for some time, I guess, since the A/C has no pressure. I had noticed earlier that during very wet weather the engine is a bit rough when starting from cold, with a slight mi...

48mpg recorded on the previous tankful. 70/30 highway/urban. Surprising in consideration of the low temps we have been experiencing.

Re: Passenger door stuck

I had that problem with the n/s rear door. I looked up about changing the actuator but by the time I was thinking to swap it the problem cleared itself (old Polo rules...)

Re: Heater 1.2 2007 9n

Various VAG forums do mention a blocked heater core as being quite common, though no clear cause is given. I suppose a degraded/incorrect coolant could start some kind of reaction and then fur up the heater core. I would not rule out that a foreign body/part could be the cause of the block. I can't ...
