I'm pretty sure its not the pedal box as long as you don't hear anything while pressing down the pedal. I would replace the cable. If nothing changed i would drop the box a.) change the sleeve and most importantly b.) check the clutch lever to the point where its welded with the cylinder that moves ...

There's a slight chance that you haven't installed properly the thermostat. Before putting it in you have to push the needle against a wall or something just to make sure it is all the way in. Doesn't matter. Both get the same part.
The thermostat you're looking for is the 032121110B and i would strongly advise to get a genuine vw part.
