I looked into this for someone a couple of years ago, so I wouldn't garauntee that this is up to date, but: Speedometers are covered by the MOT at all, so you don't need to worry about that. Your fog light doesn't have to be in the rear light cluster, so if you didn't want to swap the lights, you co...

Chorlton and the Wheelies was a sort of stop-frame animation kids programme. You had the Wheelies, who were little guys with wheels for legs who zoomed around Wheelieworld being oppressed by the evil witch who wanted them all to be unhappy. Luckily You also had Chorlton, who was a happiness dragon, ...

Cool

Cool. I was always more of a Raleigh Grifter kid myself. Cheap and indestructable, and it only weighed slightly more than my polo does. I bet even those things are collectable now. Personally, I hate ebay. I keep seeing all these cool old radio controlled cars that I could never afford as a kid, onl...

I'm pretty sure the gauge is reading correctly. Without the thermostat in, the gauge reads really low (as you'd expect). With the thermostat in, it just rises steadily, the fan doesn't kick in, but I always lose my bottle once it gets over 100 degrees and shut it down. By then the rocker cover is pl...

Right, I'll avoid those stick on aerials then, they always seemed like a bit of a gimmick anyway. The numberplate trim would be a good hiding place, but I think the aerial might need to be longer than that to make up for the fact it isn't sticking up above the car. Having said that, using the nuber ...

Thermostat issues

Ok, I'm in need of a bit of cooling system expertise.... My car overheats with the thermostat in (bottom radiator hose doesn't heat up). Without the thermostat in, it's cool as can be. I tested the thermostat and it seems ok, I have a new one too which also tested ok. They just don't work in the car...

Wheeled what?

Didn't have any of your new fangled wheeled warriors when I were a lad. We did have 'Chorlton and the Wheelies' though. It was pretty surreal.

How about a hidden aerial?

My aerial doesn't get robbed, just snapped off by the little tossers. I was thinking about trying to cobble together a hidden aerial. The standard mk3 aerial is pretty ugly, and I don't really want to add a bee sting, rather take the stock one off and go for a clean look. Not sure how it'll work out...

Oh, now I see...

Oh, I understand what you mean now, fitting resistors to lower the overall resistance (if you see what I mean), so that the flasher unit doesn't think a bulb has blown. Yeah, thats a crap way of doing it, defeats the whole point of it if you ask me. I just assumed that you would get flasher units th...

errr, not quite...

Current = Voltage / Resistance

So, increasing the resistance will reduce the current, not increase it.

You can use others...

The fuel pump relay is a pretty common type, you can use one from a different manufacturer if you like.

Have a look look at the old relay, it will have a little diagram showing the internal connections. Just find one that has a matching diagram and similar rating.

Help, I'm having a bad day...

My mk3 has been overheating occasionally recently, which I reckon was a sticking thermostat (bottom radiator hose wasn't heating up). So, I thought I'd stick a new one in, flush out the system and treat it to some new coolant. Then I decided I might as well change the water pump, and timing belt whi...

Or, for those who don't have any bleach or brake fluid handy:

blimey

Years ago, back when I had my first Polo, I saw some bloke cruising down a dual carriageway with a pint of beer. Seriously. A proper pint glass. I couldn't believe my eyes. Ah, memories... that's reminded me of my old Polo. It was my first car, a silver mk2 breadvan. Didn' t go very fast, didn't sto...

This doesn't help, but...

VW did exactly this conversion on the Mk2 Golfs. Early ones had the piller, later ones had a single full length window. I know this doesn't really help, but I just thought I'd mention it for anybody who's never noticed. It'd be interesting to see how much they had to change between the two versions,...
