This is more to do with quality rather then viscosity.

The minimum quality oil to be used in the car (most car manufacturers recomend the minimum) would be a mineral multigrade meeting a low spec. these only really come in 15w-40, the better the oil gets the larger the viscosity gap it can bridge ...
