For closure - changing the fuel filler cap made no difference - replacing the evap valve, with the newest I could find at the breakers, did.
You're welcome!

Thanks Alex for stopping me waste my time! I'll visit it anyway, to get the air con knob surround and drink holder.

'03 Polo 1.4. Upgrade to a later stock audio head unit?
Our 1.4 Polo is '03 reg, and the stereo is single DIN cassette. There's a rather newer one (no plates on it so I don't know how old but its the same body and interior) at the breakers with a double DIN sized CD player audio system. I'm sure it won't be plug-and-play, so does it have to be married to...

2004 1.4 petrol Polo P0442 code
Evaporative system leak. Surprised to get no results from a search, so: I can clear it but it comes back after a couple of days. Fuel cap sealing is often the cause, but not in this case. Does this car have the canister with a solenoid behind the OSR wheel arch liner? Or is it near the fuel tank? Ho...

9N Polo. Is there a radio code?
I'm not with the car at the moment so can't look at the manual - will there be a code to enter upon re-installing the stock radio or re-connecting the battery? Or is it "married" to the car?
Many thanks - Greendon

9N 2003 Polo Instrument cluster screen change
2003 1.4 Polo 9N. The clear screen of the instrument binnacle is marked with nail polish remover. I have no idea how or why. Its not mine of course. Anyway, I presume it could be cleared using methods similar to renovating plastic headlights, but can anyone tell me whether the transparent face can b...

The junction the drain plug is in - Mine's leaking around the joint to the radiator (not the drain plug). Looks like an easy replacement, but whats the typical failure mode? Do these work like a push fit domestic water drain pipe, with a rubber sealing ring, then the metal clip just hold it in posit...

Re: Wires to air con compressor?
That is a highly informative and useful post!
I'll investigate the compressor shear scenario first, if the book of Haynes can tell me how to get the belt off.
Many thanks Sir.
Greendon.

Wires to air con compressor?
2003 Polo 1.4 Petrol 9N. 78K miles. Background: The air con hasn't worked for ages. The switch lights up, but there's no-one home. The recirc mode operates, and following the brilliant guide elsewhere on here to repair the V68 motor, the temperature is controllable, which it wasn't before. The fan o...

Re: Air con not working right? Replace the V68 motor - HOW T
Thanks Alex, I just edited the previous post. Stepper motor is now stepping and we have control over the temperature for the first time since I can remember. Anyway, there may very well be insufficient refrigerant pressure. The air con hasn't worked for years! I'm hoping to tick all the other diagno...

Re: Air con not working right? Replace the V68 motor - HOW T
Hello there. I've had the motor apart, cleaned the pot, plugged it in again. I find that when the temp knob (it's Climatic) is on full cold, the motor runs to one extreme. I wind the knob up towards full hot, and nothing happens until I reach full hot. Then it runs to the opposite extreme. if I leav...

Aha. Thanks. Local VW main agent checked parts for me the other day, told me mine was a 6N.
Jolly good thread, this. Suitably encouraged and educated, I'll get on with it shortly.

Thanks Alex,
but I meant to ask whether it was applicable to a 6N, not 9N as I wrote. Still the case?
Thanks - Doug

Re: Air con not working right? Replace the V68 motor - HOW T
Fascinating. Is all this applicable to a 9N Polo, '04 reg, 2004? What is the significance of VCDS and Vagcom, and is there anyone in the vicinity of Hove who could assist (with those two systems) if I need? Much appreciated. Prices from VW today are temp flap motor (the v68 referred to in the thread...
