Re: Fake Ferodos?

And there was me thinking the bevels were the product of millions spent in research. Had another comment (406 forum) that ferodo compound is always coarse. So maybe not fake then. If thay fade & stink and/or catch fire that might be an indicator. Decades ago a mate bought some pads for a fiver f...

Fake Ferodos?

Just bought some 'old stock' Ferodo pads off 'you know where' for a tenner. The box looks old & dog eared but genuine, the backing plates look real, but the compound looks course & porous with no bevels at the ends. I'm no expert on pads, has anyone knowingly had fakes? How do you tell? For ...

Re: Sloppy gearstick syndrome

Ours is only slightly noisy but in most gears I think, certainly not just 5th. You can get bearing kits off Fleabay from 92 quid, can't comment on quality or life cycle. How hard is a home gearbox rebuild? I spoke to a local gearbox place and he said if it's just the 'lower bearing'? then 125 quid w...

DIY wheel bearing kits

Do they work?
Big expense and faff to take the carrier plate & strut into a garage.
Much as I would love a hydraulic press at home it's a bit extravagant for something I would use hardly ever.

Re: Sloppy gearstick syndrome

That's what I thought you'd say.
Are those boxes prone to bearing failure?

I could change the trans oil,...

Re: Sloppy gearstick syndrome

Got under it tonight, all looked in reasonable nick for age, Most wear appears to be on the L/R axis bell crank above the gearbox selector shaft, not sure how fixable that is? For/aft stick position adjusted back to limit of adjustment. I don't think any of this relates to 1st & reverse selectio...

Re: Sloppy gearstick syndrome

Slightly unrelated,
1st & reverse are inconsistant when stationary, well, you think you're in & you're not.
Gears are fine when driving.
Could this be selector adjustment?

Re: Rear drum adjustment

QUOTE:– Firmly depress brake pedal once, this adjusts the rear brakes. All pigs refuelled & lined up ready for take off. Maybe the taper spring go soft with age but that is not happening, I suspect this was causing the excessive pedal travel as when I removed the assemblies both tapers were at t...

Re: Rear drum adjustment

Think I've sussed it, stick a spike through a bolt hole and into the spring hole at the bottom of the taper, then lever the taper down a couple of notches at a time.
I'll have a proper go tomorrow after we have had a good bleeding session, followed by a bleeding good session!

Re: Rear drum adjustment

Thanks Alex Had the shoes off, pistons moving freely, copper greased moving parts. Shoes & drums look fairly recent anyway. With a star/ratchet wheel adjuster I would set the shoes so the drum would only just go on then fiddle the starwheel through a bolt hole until the shoes were lightly rubbin...

Rear drum adjustment

Never seen one of these, it's got a spring loaded taper.
I'm used to star wheels.
Whats the drill here?
