Re: 1.2 twist 4th gear

Hi Kevin My missus used to have trouble sometimes on our old 9n polo when she tried to manually 'find' the gate for 3rd or 4th,the 'H' pattern is sometimes slightly oblique/slanted on cars and I think perhaps fairly easy to wrongly position the gear lever manually,I just kept saying to her - ''if it...

Re: Tappet noise or something else?

Hi Rum...
Our engine code was AUB - 100 HP
TBH the Tesco 99 seemed to be ok - we only had one fill up where the car pinked afterwards, but I suspected that the wrong grade of fuel was in the filling station Tanks LOL

Re: Tappet noise or something else?

I used to have a Polo 1.4 16v and I found that using standard 95ron petrol made the engine 'pink' sometimes,we started using Tesco 99 momentum and that stopped the 'pinking',the pinking sound was totally unlike pinking on older engines and it sounded like a flat mechanical rattle which only occurred...

Re: Loss of power low mpg, after 20 miles of driving

Might be worth checking the Hot Air Flap in the Engine Cover, controlled by a waxstat - they tend to fail 'Open' which would give permanent Hot Intake Air,we took our AUB engine 1.4 16v (almost identical to BBY) and monitored the Intake temperature on the 'Torque' APP - even with our Air Flap manuall...

Also perhaps check for binding brakes ?

Re: Loss of power low mpg, after 20 miles of driving

Might also be an idea to take a look at all the vacuum hoses in the engine bay for any obvious splits/age deterioration.

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

Tried out my new 'Torque' app/OBD dongle thingy today and we went for a short (14 mile) drive to get some real time engine parameters - Engine Intake Temp started off at +9 deg c (agreeing with ambient) but was up to + 35 deg c at the halfway point - by the time we got back into town it was reading ...

Sounds good LP - ours still running happily on ECP TripleQX 5w40.

Re: 9n bby auto . (Looking to increase performance and acceleration)

When we first got our 1.4 16v (AUB) Polo (manual) it was really sluggish, but gradually has improved over the last 4 years by doing various little jobs on the beast. Ours is the 100HP version but when I also looked at the power curve (graph) for this engine I realised that one has to rev it to get ma...

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

Yes I agree with RUM - it will be a mix of Hot/Cold air but I would not like to guess the mix ratio  Should be easy enough to fit a flap/blanking plate to block off the hot air path. Wino on the skoda forum reckoned he got improved fuel consumption with cold air,we have not done enough mile...

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

Polo still seems to be happy with permanent cold intake air in varying weather conditions, seems to have almost got rid of the last vestige of 'hesitation'/flat spot when moving the accelerator pedal from 'off' to 'on' during gear changing and whilst accelerating away from a 'slow down'/coasting. We ...

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

Another 70 mile return trip yesterday, the polo seems to have a little more 'grunt' at lowish RPM and the engine seems a little smoother in its power delivery - so we are happy with Cold Intake Air at the moment 8)

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

All went OK today - the overnight forecast was +6c but as usual it was colder than forecast (the local weather station where they get the readings from is Strathallan Airfield - 6 miles away) and we set off for the Gliding Club at 0730 with the ambient temperature 0 deg c.On the 35 mile drive the am...

Re: Airbox engine cover flap valve (engine pinking when hot)

Yes absolutely RUM - if I had wanted to replace the capsule then I would have had to remove the torx screws thus gaining access to the capsule housing/bracket. But because I just did the 'free' woodscrew modification then I only had to remove the air filter to gain access (I was changing the air fil...
