Could also be the Coolant Temp sensor.
My old 1.4 Ibiza used to do it, and my current 1.4 8V Polo does.
Its the Green 4 pin one on the thermostat housing. You will also get higher fuel consumption as one of the symptoms if it has gone.

Manual to Auto...engine change
Hi, I'm fitting a 16V 1.4 into my 8V, mines currently an Auto....and because I'm lazy, I want to keep it auto :) tHow hard is it to replace the fly wheel of the 16V with my torque convertor? I wanna try and do it all in a day, so can't just remove stuff to find out before hand. I know how easy it is...
