Yep -- that control is to adjust the actual mirror left or right (and switch the defrost function on)

I am far from an expert, but would suspect that it is caused by a 'Relay' clicking out and then in again :: But why exactly? Don't know........

Sorry, Just re-read your post to see you said the buttons didn't work - so changing the battery isn't really going to help

Change the Key fob battery ??

I wouldn't expect that a 'compressor' can be holed -- you may mean the 'Condenser' (Radiator looking thingy) On many cars this is fitted at the front, low down and therefore prone to getting holed by stones etc Does seem bit of a coincidence though.....
