If you are going to stay with your 4 1/2" wide rims then I would really recommend 155/70/13 tyres. Although 165/65's are a better tyre on the Polo, they really do need a 5 1/2" wide rim to be a comfortable fit.

That is a very special car you have been given there. So many of the mk1's have surcumbed to severe corrosion, yours looks to be VERY nice indeed.

What colour is it, grey? Quite unusual if it is. Did you remove the side bump strips or did it never have 'em?

Yeah, the steering wheel is much nicer to use and I too thought it was smaller than the original one. However, when I measured it they were the same o.d. 'tis just a chunkier rim.

Adam, it is deffinately worth it regardless of the engine in your Polo.
The brace bars stiffen the bodyshell where the suspension top mounts and front anti roll bar are. The suspension will be able to work at its best, giving a more positive and precise feel.

165/55/14 is the right size if you want to keep the rolling radius correct.
Mytyres.co.uk only list Hankook Ventus in this size @ around £32 each which isn't bad.
Other than that 165/60's will slightly increase the r.rad. but not enough for you to notice, and there are far more makes to choose ...

I'm putting in new slider kits on my calipers. I've fitted the new outer rubber sleeves on and was wondering do I need to use a smear of copper grease between the inner metal sleeves and PTFE inserts?

I'm not sure on the full spec. of the Twist models but I think they were fairly basic (based on the C?) with 1 litre/4 speed mechanicals. Seat trim may have been specific along with the body decals, but whatever I don't think they had any interesting or particularly worthwhile features.

If its a UK spec MK2 then it won't have a catalytic converter.
You can get a new exhaust system for it from Eurocarparts or GSF Carparts.
