It really comes down to how much you want to spend on a MK1 -2.
Unfortunately, proper tuning is an expensive business, and if you only have a 55bhp engine your gonna have to spend a fair bit to make a genuine 65 -70bhp.

Adam, it is deffinately worth it regardless of the engine in your Polo.

ADVICE ON G40 CALIPER OVERHAUL
I'm putting in new slider kits on my calipers. I've fitted the new outer rubber sleeves on and was wondering do I need to use a smear of copper grease between the inner metal sleeves and PTFE inserts?
