I know it's a long shot, but I got the same fault after changing the clutch. The problem was really simple: A fuse in the little box on the + side of the battery was missing. My mechanic had to remove the battery, and somehow managed to loose one of the two fuses to the ABS pump..

Wow.. That was a suprise. I've read up on the VW Polo 6n1 and from what I've found ut, they should be the same (085 gearbox) with different ratios. Are we talking totally different or just minor things?

To update; I've got a hold of a kit but haven't installed it yet. I don't have the rubber "boots" / hoses that sits between the door and the frame. Not sure if it's a good idea just to poke a hole through the rubber seals and run the wires through.. Hopeless to get hold of those boots.. :/

I have the same question, but the other way around.. Got an 1,4 8V with a dodgy gearbox, and I've have my hands on a gearbox from a 1997 1,6 8V.

I would guess there are some differences with the gearing, but I would mind getting a little bit lower revs in 5th gear / 110 kph.
