I see you’re based in Australia, that said. I wouldn’t worry about it. Try living in the northern hemisphere!
It’s surface rust. Those axle hub caps are good, wire brush the axle hub, liberally spray with lithium white grease or Lanogard and whack the cap back on.

Re: Brake pad contact
Sorry to hear your health issues. The pads are probably fine. If I remember correctly there’s an angle chamfer on front pads. Volkswagen pistons do tend to seize. I rebuilt mine 50k miles all round last year with a brake kit from Autodoc, so new dust seals, square seals, ‘o’ rings and a brake fluid ...

I have found Meyle HD to be excellent, Lemforder too on suspension related upgrades.

Re: Premature bearing failure?
Update. Finally got around to changing the bearing. Parts arrived a week ago, but I had some leave, so was away. Got up early, not really in the mood as forecast was for gales., but importantly it was dry. It’s times like this you just want a warm, dry, well lit space. Driveway it was as the garage ...

Re: creaking sound
You can't tell anything from shock mount in engine bay, you'll need to pull wheel off for proper inspection.
Regardless of mileage, ARB links are a likely culprit coming off a bump. If replacing, then Meyle HD parts are excellent.

Re: Premature bearing failure?
RUM4MO - I gave the ABS sensor a lick of ceramic grease, just a smidgen obviously not covering the business end.

Re: Premature bearing failure?
Thanks for torque values and responses. So dived in today waiting for the part to arrive. Just as well as the brake dust shield has rusted through and the ABS sensor is a pain to remove. Incidentally that link for removing the sensor will be difficult on Mk5 Polo as the sensor is recessed into the h...

Re: Premature bearing failure?
I should have done both sides I suppose, but money is always needed elsewhere. Roads are a mess just now and I’ve hit a couple of potholes recently, so wouldn’t be surprised if that contributed. Good advice regards a smear of extra grease. I still have the Chinese EBay tool for fitting which isn’t e...

Re: Premature bearing failure?
Update to the update.
That's the O/S front gone now just shy of 50k miles. Just ordered a FAG bearing - but not happy on having to replace an item that should be good for 100k miles.

G42 sensor and air circulating motor on 1.4 diesel
I finished the annual service on my Polo 1.4 TDI (66PS), just hit 49k miles, 15 plate. I scanned with VCDS and noticed the following faults. Air intake temperature sensor G42 sensor (P0113 fault). Is this the one after the air box, I thing it’s either Bosch or Hella part? Any reason to buy direct fr...

Re: New actuator for a 2013 1.2 tsi ( and maybe turbo )
The new turbos from Turbo-diesel (Bosch/Mahle) for 1.2 petrol come with 2 year warranty. It’s such an involved job and my car was a keeper so I went down the new turbo route. I’m sure the reconditioned turbos are fine. Depends what you want and your budget. Their communication could be better and fr...

Re: New actuator for a 2013 1.2 tsi ( and maybe turbo )
Volkswagen won’t sell actuator as it’s usually calibrated to turbo. There’s quite a lot of work to set that up with specialised tools. You can test actuator with a vacuum pump. Also if actuator gone, then turbo usually not far behind it with carbon build up. Try turbo-diesel.co.uk site. I bought new...

Re: Blocked heater core due to silica bag burst
Fight it all the way. Dave Sterl has a decent video on his YouTube channel. I fished out the silica bag as soon asI saw it. The entire cooling system will need to be checked and flushed. Even then, I’d be wary.

Just venting!
So, got up early, I’m not feeling great as been dealing with shingles and my vision is screwed in one eye for a couple of weeks. Anyway, oil change on the Polo 1.4 TDI as part of a full service. Could hardly feel my fingers as it was around 2 degrees. Used the correct filter housing tool, which just...

Re: Hand brake sticks on when lever is depressed
Drums are the devil’s work. If they are sticking, as mentioned, could be leaking brake cylinder. As they get higher mileage 100k+ then the drum lining is reduced through wear and tear. You can adjust all you like but easier just to replace the drum. I’ve also witnessed pad material detaching from th...
