So as an update to this.

I have managed to get hold of a VCDS scan of the car. Output below. This has thrown up a couple of things, 1. there appears to be an ABS issue. 2. The OBS code gives some sort of emission related fault code.

Not able to add anything about the fault but according to Honest John there should be no charge for a software update for a car under 6 years old as it comes under a 'high cost high value item' that should last at least 6 years. Think you might have to fight it though.

Does that car have ESP, if so some thing in that system could be causing this problem, but if you have had a VW dealership scan the car for fault codes, they should have found what was causing this fault to have been logged.

Just to add to the above. Seems the spark plugs were changed again during the service I mentioned, so that would in theory answer my question about the tightening of the plugs.

Recently had the engine management light appear on my dash. Scanned the codes and got U0416. This translates to Invalid data received - vehicle dynamics control module. Not sure that this description gives me much to play with in terms of fault finding.
