It might help to remove the air cleaner and squirt a bit of WD40 or the like (carbon cleaner ideally) onto the throttle plate and leave for a few hours or overnight.
Also possible that you have a air leak, check any "hard" plastic pipes around the brake servo, these have a tendency to crack.

Cpould you pick up a alternator in a scrap yard, there should be plenty of them around now, some of them will take it back if it doesn't work.

The starter is/should be a pre engaged type where the starter solenoid pulls the pinion (and slowly rotates it) onto the flywheel, when its fully engaged then a set of contacts allows full current to spin the starter motor, not sure how the motor could spin without being fully engaged but maybe diff...
