the faulty PCV valve idea is interesting - Im going to look into that - and will report back. I don't think its the valves as it runs really sweetly when its up to speed..? Is it easy to diagnose / test the PCV valve?

Looks like a vacuum hose of sorts, I'm guessing it's a BMD or AWY engine? From what I can find it looks like it's for the PCV valve and is made up of several hoses. Differing between the two engines.
