That's all really good info, thanks, but from what car will I find an 085 gearbox?

Standard MK3 Polo? G40? :?:

Also, what about a clutch and clutch linkage? Can I use the existing cable actuation? Will I need different gear linkage?

Can I use my existing axles or will I need different length ...

MK3 Polo Gearbox into MK1 1300 Golf ?

I have heard from a few people that a 5-speed gearbox from a MK3 Polo (I'm not sure which trim level or engine specification) will swap into a MK1 Golf that has a 1300cc motor commonly used in MK1 Polo's.

I know I'll have one hell of a time actually getting my hands on one of these tranny's here in ...
