I have exactly the same problem! It's intermittent on mine though, some days all works fine, other days the fault is there. Not really looked into what's causing it, but fortunately the car does still lock properly.
Sorry I can't help but I will watch this thread with interest!

With a year ahead of me of driving through roadworks with average speed cameras
I'd be interested in this too!

Re: Stereo harness
I just asked my local VW main dealer to pull the stereo out. They did it free of charge using the correct stereo keys.

Re: The GTI effect?
I think that's just the way people drive these days, with no respect for others. Especially when they're in a rush to get to work. People deliberately get in the wrong lane at roundabouts because the queue is shorter, then cut you up changing lanes. Audi drivers seem to be the worse though!

Re: Who has the highest mileage original gearbox?
I like this thread, gives me more confidence in my gearbox after hearing about all the failures on here.
Mine is just coming up to 101k, still on the original box and after reading all the problems, I thought I was on borrowed time! Good to hear they can go longer.

Re: Ahhhh insurance!!!
Every year I look around to try and get a better deal, but no-one ever seems to be able to beat Elephant for me. As joe2612 says, put a parent on the policy as a named driver and try all posible combinations. I have my Mum as a named driver on my policy but not my Dad, this worked out the cheapest ...

Re: New Brakes Required - Discs & Pads
Tim, do you not find the greenstuff pads a bit dusty?
I needed new discs and pads not too long ago myself. I went for EBC standard discs and greenstuff pads since they are supposed to be low dust/easy to clean. However, since being fitted I have found them to be worse for dust than my previous set ...

Re: Spotted this morning in Chichester
Hi James, that was me! Where are you from? I noticed you cued up at the roadworks in Parklands, are you local? I've seen your other post (back in April) about being a newbie wanting info on gearbox and clutch. I've had mine 3 years and 4 months now, in which time gone from 43k to 90k miles, mine too ...

I now have my new sachs clutch kit all fitted with a new genuine VW cable. Wow, what a difference! Its so much lighter now, a lot easier to drive in traffic! I got the clutch from GSF as you suggested, it was £83, collected in store. I got my usual local mechanic to fit it and all in (clutch, cable ...

Tim, since you're on your 3rd clutch, any advice on getting a replacement clutch? I am on 82000 miles, still on original clutch and gearbox however the clutch wants replacing soon as its getting a little fierce. My local VW main stealer quoted £201 for a clutch and 4.5 hours work @ £78ph labour, I ...
