What real benefits do you get from a spoiler??

Late 20's but looks about 22-23 a bit of a stunner. Philippinos age very slowly.

Any ideas of the improvements you get with a spoiler on a Polo?
Downforce preventing lift at high speed.
Drag therefore slowing the car reducing top end and fuel economy.
Or is it just Barry?
