It's doable. They are 7x17. Likely ET41. Smallest adapters you can get are 15mm.
7x17 ET26 with 195/40 tyres would work on 9N.
It's a lot of trouble really (I've had 112->100 for Audi winters) for wheels that aren't wide enough to work out well.
If they were 8s then that might be better.

No probs Tim. I have APs. I think they are really good. Two thoughts. You need to remove adjusters at rear to get right height. They are also on the 'comfy' side. If you're running very low then you might want something adjustable so you can wind up the damper settings. That all costs money though.....

Re: BBS RC WITH A VOTEX KIT?
RC041 are et41 5x120. So 15mm adapters will take that to et26.
That should work ok. Esp. with 195/40x17.

Re: Max offset's on a 9N
My wheels are 8J with Et35 and they sit flush to the arch. Im getting bigger adaptors for the rear when I fit them in the spring for UD. How much clearance do you have on the back behind the rim as with a 35mm adaptor I will have et35 same as you'res but an extra inch @ the back? Extra 0.5". T...

Re: Nico's Polo 9N3
That's pretty much as I'd guess. My guess for the front would be ET35 rather than 40 on a 8" rim but you're on air and 40 will probably allow a nice tuck. Can't wait to see it when done. I'd like to know the specs on the white car above too. I've just put 17s on my 9n. They're 7.5" et32 an...

Cam 9n3 that looks really nice.
What are the specs on the wheels/tyres etc? Things like offsets and tyre size/brand?

Re: Max offset's on a 9N
The inside clearance is something to watch you're right. Try this thread:

There's a link to a calculator there that might help.
Edit: the camber plates aren't too tricky if you're handy with cars and have the tools/space to work on it.
