my mates mk2 coupe s had a side exit exhaust for a while. it was a right bodge though, just cut off the standard pipe where it points to the side before going into the back box & then welded a straight piece of pipe with a tailpipe on the end of it which stuck out just before the rear wheel. yeah they were always one of the best of modifications, but apparently people have been getting silly renewal quotes through now & people trying to get new quotes have been told they don't like modifications anymore.
