It's not quite plug-and-play. The unit needs to be coded with VAG-COM for the number of doors in the car, and whether you want selective unlocking, automatic locking, automatic unlocking etc etc. It is basically plug-and-play if you have a 4-door car and get a unit also from a 4-door car. It's in the area above the brake/accelerator pedals. The plugs are on the top side and not accessible without removing the whole unit. It's held in by a plastic clip which I managed to get out without breaking but you might have to resort to cable ties to put it back.

You actually DON'T need to remove the whole dash to retrofit the cruise control -- but it might be easier! I retrofitted it to my 9N Polo over the weekend without removing the dash itself. The compact connector that the cruise wire needs to go into is extremely difficult to access, but I managed to ...
