My 6N2 (Saloon) has the temp sensor on the bottom right of the engine. It can be hard to spot but essentially just follow the radiator hoses and where they enter the engine block is about where you want to look. The sensor plugs in at right-angles to the connection.

Change the green temp sensor. If that doesn't fix it, change the thermostat.

It goes in the thermostat housing as detailed in the start of this thread

Only get a genuine one from VW. About £25 give or take.

I have managed to find one for US$65, but they say it's a "Quality VW Part", and our only VW dealership say they no longer stock the part nor can they source a genuine one for me :x

Thats a crazy price.

Im surprised your local VW dealership says it cant get them considering this is one of the most widely used temperature sensors that VW have ever used - its used on loads of golfs polos boras etc!

That's what i said to them!! but they tend to become very idle when a customer wants something specific.. I eventually got the part "Quality Part", which is a German brand called Vemo?? Anyways, will have a go at replacing it this afternoon..

Hello All,
New member here. Driving a 2001 1.4l Automatic. The 4-door Hatchback. Just had the Engine Management light come on while driving the other day and realised the temperature gauge on the dash wasn't reading. Car's still driving absolutely flawlessly, even in this cold snap so I'm assuming the engine temperature sensor's failed open and it's constantly reading cold. The needle does seem to lift slightly on occasion, but not by much and not for long.

Not really flush with cash at the moment so I'd like to take a swing at replacing the sensor myself, I'm just lacking the sensor itself and a clear idea of where it goes. The images at the beginning of this thread seem to have gone AWOL so has anyone else got photos/diagrams? Also, I'm trying to find the right sensor but the one mentioned earlier in the thread doesn't seem to be on EuroCarParts. The closest I can find is either Temperature Sensor or HAAS Temperature sensor.

Any thoughts?

Welcome.

I would say its probably the temperature sensor dead, plus the thermostat failing (its very common as the mornings get colder when they are worn)

The sensor lives on the right hand side of the engine in the coolant housing where the top radiator pipe goes into - the thermostat is in here too

As for buying the sensor, get a genuine one from VW as the ones from euro have a very short life span. Same goes for the thermostat. Youll want to get some more G13++/G14 coolant too to top it up as youll lose a fair bit.
