The topic says it all, does 6N2 have interference or non-interference engine?

Interference.

Cambelt breaks, pistons and valves make contact with each other, but the valve stems are really thin, so they just bend. I have a thread on this somewhere

Thanks.

I believe I have to replace the belt pretty soon (the sooner the better).

Is this something I can do on my own? (Easy / hard?)

It depends how much experience and the tools that you have.

It's not actually that difficult, the biggest challenge will be getting the crank pulley off. If you have a good impact gun and correct socket it's a 2 minute job. If not you will need a breaker bar and another pair of hands to hold the flywheel in position.

I can probably do one in a couple of hours - allow 4 to 6 hours for the first time. I use the INA kit available from EurpCarParts. I expect Biltema will have them (wish we had them).

I read somewhere that I could cut the old time belt in two lengthwise, and then just fit the new one into the engine without dismantling anything. I believe this will not work if I also have to replace the tightener and water pump? Even if I mark the turning parts well?

That's just wrong. You cannot even get the timing belt cover off without removing the crank pulley

The tensioner comes in the timing belt kit.

You don't have to replace the water pump.

You will need the special tools to hold the camshafts in position......... which are readily available, or alternatively two 8mm drill bits do the job.

Have a look around for Elsawin to install on a laptop. You will find that really useful for diagnosis and instructions

Thanks

I just wrote a long answer, but for some reason it seems like it disappeared(?) So here goes again :)

I am a bit confused, because when I search google for "how-to's" I find these two "manuals":

1) http://replace-timing-belt.com/how-to-r ... n-1-4-16v/

2) http://replace-timing-belt.com/how-to-r ... olo-6n-1-4_/

And since the car parts dealers tells me I have only two valves, I believe it is the second one I have to follow.

But this says; "The vehicle manufacturer has not recommended a timing belt replacement interval for this engine ..."

Does this mean I dont have to replace it at all, or just that they (the manufacturer) dont have a interval for it?

The following pic is what comes up when I search my car by registration number at the car part shops:

Since you're relatively new, your post had to be hand-approved. It's allright now.

It's always helpful to have the engine code. I automatically think 4 valves, but as you say, yours is a 2 valve engine.

I think perhaps the VW position was to inspect and renew when necessary. Gates / INA provide an interval and it's usually around 60-80,000 miles. be cautios and change at 60,000 miles / 100,000km

I was going to upload this as an attachment, but pdf's are not allowed so grab it from here

Let me know when you have it so I can release the space again

Sorry I did not post the engine code earlier, but I did not know there was more than one before I started to google it.

Thanks for the pdf - I have downloaded it now. This looks pretty easy, and I think I have all the tools I need to do it. And you still think I dont have to replace the water pump?

And thanks for all the help you provide, I really appreciate it. You have been great :)

No problem at all, glad I could help.

Replace the water pump if the history is unknown or there are signs of leaks. Replacing components like that is often done because the component cost is small in relation to the labour charge of having to do the whole job again, but as you are doing it yourself it's your time and choice. Just make sure you get a good quality one

Lykke til !

A little update.

The car has a deadline for approved mandatory roadworthiness test june 30. I think I will replace only the time belt this time, and see what I have to do else in june. I believe it will be too expensive to fix it. New frontshield, new brakes, new shocks all around, propably new wheel bearings as well, and this is what I know needs to be fixed today ... :)

None of those jobs seem big or complex, and I assume the windscreen will be done by a specialist anyway.

I would check the rear brake pipes where they run along the trailing arm. They are a favourite fail point too ;)
