Transmission noise (help would be much appreciated)
Transmission noise (help would be much appreciated)
hey guys, im new to this site, but by the looks of it you lot seem quite helpful with technical issues. So heres mine:
Ive got a vw polo 2000 (X Reg) 1.4 16v. When im driving in gear (mostly in 3rd, 4th, and 5th) theres a repetitive tapping kind of noise, it only seems to increase with speed, not revs, and when the clutch pedal is depressed it goes away. Also it is sometimes a little difficult getting it into 1st gear. Could anyway please shine some light on this problem for me?
Thanks

I had a whirring problem with my 6n 16v, which was reletive to the revs and speed. The whirring goes away if I press the clutch also. Usually it would happen after i've thrashed the car but one night it just exploded and felt like metal pieces where being shattered everywhere whilst the whirring got really loud!
Anyway, if it happens and the engine noise stops if the you press the clutch then i'd think its either the gearbox, bearings or driveshaft. Problems with gear selection would indicate the same or a bad clutch.
Mine turned out to be a shattered gearbox, which after recondition gear selection was easy and the clutch became feather-light. Although i'm not mechanically minded i'm not sure tappets would stop making a noise if the clutchs pressed.

if the whirring tapping noise goes away when u press the pedal down ur looking ate a knackered release bearing for ur clutch! when clutch pedal is pressed bearing pushes onto diaphragm spring on clutch housing to release clutch plate off of flywheel! so when pedal aint pressed down ur knackered bearing is spinning around and making noises! cheap part to bust costly labour coz ur box has to come out! so change clutch at same time! hope that helps

I'd put it down to the greabox mate.
I'm experiencing the same thing at the moment.
If it was the release bearing it would be making a noise once the cutch is depressed (unfortunately like mine ALSO does!).
Take it down to a specialist and get it checked out asap. The faster you sort it out the better.

Tim may remember me talking about it with mine. All started when I bought the car 2 years ago. Noise was minimal and realised it would do it after motorway runs or when I thrash the car for a while. got more and more common until one night......
BANG
All the bearings went and I could hear all the internals crash against each other as I nursed the car home. Eventually the box had to be re-cond as I couldn't find another. In all I spent £550 for the job, which atleast sorted my pedal box failures I kept having!
If you sort the box out asap, you may save yourself cash on internal parts if your getting a re-con. It may even work out cheaper then getting another.
