1.0 MPI new oil leak

Post by piglet14 »

Quite wet all round sump but not making puddles yet.
Is there a favourite spot on these?

Its unlikely to be the sump. The gasket is a liquid gasket and doesnt tend to degrade over time. Its more likely to be the breather on the back of the block, or a leak from above.

It's up the front of the pan as well, would a leaking breather get oil that far round?
I'll have to clean it up and take the belt covers off.

It can run around quite easily. The other possibility is a few loose bolts and it's coming down the thread

Back of the block. Follow the crankcase breather hose down from the airbox on the left handside.

Do you mean the black plastic casing that's screwed to the back of the block next to the starter? Quite manky round there.
The belt covers all look nice and dry so probably not seals.

So what leaks then, O-ring or gasket?

Sometimes the breather cracks, the hose splits, the gasket perishes

You might be able to see it from underneath with a torch and mirror

To access it it’s normally a case of take the inlet manifold off for proper access

Access looks OKish from underneath but I can't tell what's going on above it.
Is there a physical connection to the manifold?

No it goes into the block. The manifold just gets in the way

Bit like the D/S from underneath then.
I'll have a go when I've finished drilling door frames.
