Fit a small subwoofer in little polo with an amp?

Hey polo people, just joined ok so i want to install a car subwofer into my car but i don't want nothing fancy and big. I found a website that says you can connect a car subwoofer without an amp check it out http://how-to-install-car-audio-systems ... tereo.html. So basically to my understanding it saying to disconnect the back speaker and use the wires to connect it to a sub. I only want a small 8 inch sub so maybe this would work ok, but still i am unsure since i have never done this before. What do you think polo people is this worth doing or should is just upgrade the door speakers to more powerful ones?
