Gear shift Problems

Post by funkyfatbeatz »

Sometimes I struggle to get the car into 5th gear.
It seems to be better when I really shove it into gear
when I am going fast. All other gears are fine.

Anyone else have this problem?

I was wondering about changing the gearbox oil.

coulda sworn i already posted about this, but it'll be worth your while getting the gear oil level checked and refilled if necessary. ignore what the guy in the vw garage says about it, there's been many a tale of it slowly leaking, leaving 5th unlubricated, and then you eventually lose the gear completely when the shaft burns out (and could destroy the entire box). Oil is cheap, parts aren't!

On the other hand it could just be knackered synchro from a lifetime of bludgeon-style granny shifts like mine has seemingly endured - it's only a 4 speed not a 5, but a total dog with it some days in all gears...
