polo 6n2 1.4 16v power loss when overtaking

Hello

ok i have recently bought a 2000 w-reg 1.4 16v with 15k on the clock backed up with VW service history

on my way home from work one night the polo lost power and made a rattling noise from the engine like it was running on 3 cylinders
thought nothing of it because of the small engine working hard going up a steap hill... ( this happened whilst driving in 3rd gear

then this happens again when the mrs is driving the car, this time over taking on a dual carrige way ... the car loses power and then quickly picks backup

any ideas

tried searching on google for the fault and alot of people say it could be a cambelt pre tension
