Do I need a crane/hoist to remove and replace a 1.4 engine and transmission?

Yes. Absolutely no way you’ll get it out otherwise

When I take the engine/auto trans out are there any bolts/fasteners that will need to be replaced other than:
Wheel hub nuts
Engine mount bolts

It’s not a straight out job. I strongly suggest you get a Haynes manual which documents the process in great detail

You could swap it on a jack if you take the front end off (assuming your polo has a bolt on front end)
