I really want HIDs on my 6n2, and i don't like to rain on the parade, but i don't think it's that simple...

Basically I think a specially designed reflector is needed for HIDs, before you even get to the glass lens

3. Can I put HID into my stock halogen reflector lighting assembly?

Yes. But it is strongly recommended that you do not. Although it may not seem so, directing the light produced by a headlight bulb to the right places requires a good deal of precision. Reflector assemblies on cars that come equipped with halogen bulbs are made to direct the light produced by halogen bulbs correctly. Replacing those bulbs with HID bulbs that produce three times the light yields a terrible beam pattern. You will have light going all over the place, most importantly into the eyes of drivers of oncoming vehicles. Even if you can tolerate such a beam pattern, your lights would be a safety hazard on the road. Many people try to solve this problem by lowering their lights. However, to reduce glare to acceptable levels, you would have to lower HID lights in halogen reflectors so much that you would not have much of a useable light increase over your stock setup.
This is also interesting: http://faqlight.carpassion.info/hl-hid-kits.htm

I'll have to wait and see a set of HIDs in a Polo in reality at one of the shows this summer to make up my mind

that was an interesting read ill give you that. The thing is, people on the forum such as dino, and a fair few other members have installed retrofit HIDs into their car with no problems.

Yes, ok to get the best possible output and clarity you need a full OEM assembly - but have you seen the price of a single GTi headlight alone - its something like 200 quid upwards.

Retro fit kits are a good way to increase your headlight power, plus making them look good. These companies wouldnt sell so many and get good customer feedback if they were selling products that blinded other drivers and were unsafe to use on the road.

I take your point into consideration tho :)

Also, have a read - you dont get reviews like this easily in such high volumes:

Hmm ok. This makes me think its a bad idea. Im gonna pullout of this. After seeing the difference in beam pattern, it makes you think is it really that safe. Not passing an MOT makes me scared aswell .

I'll still do the group buy on these, but I take no reponsibility whatsoever for any problems or issues you may have through purchasing these HID kits.

And finally, for those wondering about the legal status with the Department of Transport, i found this:

A complete new headlight assembly with new reflector and lens. The standard headlight cant cope with the 3x extra light output - which gives you a beam thats all over the place.
