Help with PQ25 Max BCM and bi-xenons

Hi all,
I know this is not a polo but there seem to be a few xenon experts on here!!

I have just fitted a pair of oem bi-xenon's (2016 lights) with led drl into a 2012 (MY13) Amarok Highline. (this truck came with the 'auto' lights switch & rain sensor fitted.)
Previous mods include oem reverse camera, mk6 golf tiptronicsteering wheel and oem towbar which all went in and coded with no issues.

The 10-pin connector for the headlights is the same for both old and new lights and the lights are a drop-in replacement. I had height adjust, dipped/main beam and the indicator working as soon as they were fitted without doing anything to the wiring/coding etc.

On my original all-halogen headlights pin 4 was the feed for the DRL and pin 10 for the side light.
Following the little information I can find on the net I have removed pin 10 at the headlight end of the loom. I have run a new (pair of) wires from pin 10 at the lights to the BCM connector T73B pins 5 & 6 (supposed to be a pwm feed out for led DRL)
I then had to uncheck the coding tick box for 'parking lights on with terminal 15 off' and the drl led's started working.
The bcm has a part no. of 7H0 937 090 - BCM PQ25 Max4 H72 0706 which is supposed to fully support xenon
The led strip is built into the headlight.
The led controller is separate to the ballast and has a part number of 4G0907697G although I have also tried swapping these for a 4G0907697F version to test.

The only problem is I have no side lights. I have checked on a Amarok with factory Xenon and when in the sidelight or dipped/main beam position the led drl lights should dim to around half brightness. I get no light at all.
So, When my light switch is off - I get only the led drl at the front (when I turn the key on) and the instrument cluster dials light up
When I turn the lightswitch to parking/sidelight I get the rear and numberplate lights along with the dash and button lighting but no front lights (ie the dlr's turn off)
They are still off with dipped /main beam and the same thing happens with the switch in the 'auto' posotion.

From What I can work out so far - The led module needs +12v on both pin 4 and pin 10 to work at full brightness. Both 4 and 10 are measuring 12v when the dlr is on. When I turn on side or main lights pin 10 (the new wires I have run) is dropping to 3.8v.
I have read a few bits about the led modules not working under 50% brightness so it may be that I just need to increase the value of the pwm on pin 10.
I am presuming that a pwm of 12v at 50% should be mesuering about 6v on my meter rather than 3.8v?

I have tried loads of variations of coding, even down to a copy & paste of the long code from the factory truck.
I have also been looking through the wiring diagrams and I am pretty sure I have got everything correct on that side.
The fact that the new pin 10 wires switch on to 12v and then drop to 3.8v makes me think they are the correct ones just need turning up a bit? maybe?

I am thinking about feeding a 5vdc feed into pin 10 just to see if they light up with a little bit more power but I don't know if I can use a direct dc voltage or must it be a pwm feed?

Ayy ideas would be awesome as I have been spending about 5hrs a night on this for the last 2 weeks!!!

It seems to be a coding problem (as long as the ballasts are in right condition).
Please post a complete autoscan (as iichel said). First ten digits of the VIN are needed, so we be able to check the exact diagrams (elsawin) of your Amarok. They can vary depending on exact date of manufacture.

Pleeeeaaaase, do not do unnecessary tests to feed the ballasts, you could break the ballasts.


(Do not worry about the other faults in your autoscan, this is normal in this forum...hahaha :lol: ... and we will try to correct them or know the origin, no problem)

The headlights came with 4G0907697G drivers for the leds. (there is another ballast for the xenon bulbs)
I looked on the parts and it suggests it sholud be 4G0907697F for Amarok. I have purchased 1 of these as a test and it works the same as the others. (currently I have the 'G' installed in one side and the 'F' in the other.

As said, I have removed the wire in pin 10 at both headlights and ran new cable from pin 10 to pin B5 and B6 on BCM.

I have checked the wiring diagrams and I think it is ok??? I do wonder if I need to provide some extra power supply to the bcm to provide more power for the pins B5 + B6? I can not find this information.

I always get fault code for side lights on every scan. i do not know if this is because I have removed the original fron side light wire at headlight or if it is because it is not detecting the new wire correctly.
If I leave my byte 18 at 65 I do not get the bulb warning light on the dash. If I use 66 or 67 then I get the warning light come on.

All other functions seem to be working. I have dipped and high beam. High beam will 'flash' if I pull the stalk with all the lights off. The DRL will come on, full brightness with the light switch in '0'. It will also come on full bright in 'auto' (until auto turns dipped beam on)
DRL will turn off if I put the hand brake on. DRL will turn off (on one side only) when I use the indicator.

Problems:
When I switch to parking/side light the front LED DRl goes off. (it should dim) rear lights work as normal.
When Dipped Beam is on (via auto or switch) DRL goes off. (rear lights work as normal)

Thanks in advance for any ideas on this!!!

Byte21 Bit0 disabled, the rest of bytes are the same as before. Even so the BCM may not be correct, where does it come from?

So with that coding everything stays the same (still no sidelights or dimming drl) except I get the bulb warning light on the dash.

If I then change byte 23 bit 1 still the same but I have no high beam shutter. (It does work if I pull the stalk for flash)

The BCM is the original that was factory fitted in this truck.

The modules/drivers for daytime running lights/leds must be 4G0907697F according to ETKA (from 2013 to present -2018-), and in no case the 'G' version.
Install the correct version on the appropriate side. :)

Perfect, B5 for the left bixenon headlamp, B6 for the right bixenon headlamp.

The power supply is via terminal T73a/66 BCM... if the dome light or rear parking lights work do not need to check the fuse SC21 ...In short, your original electrical installation (with automatic lights) already provides such power.

Make sure that the new terminals/wires you have inserted into the connectors for headlights and pink locking mechanisms are in the proper way (just like all other terminals)

It should work properly. The coding is correct.

Maybe you meant Byte23 Bit0.
In that case it does exactly what it has to do, ...due to the way your High beams (shutter) are wired (with/through a relay -J25-). Old way with 7H0 BCMs.
It must be enabled.

This may be the real problem. Not all BCM Max are ready for these Bixenon headlights.

There are many BCMs that have been discontinued within the ETKA so it is impossible to know the information correctly.

You may need a BCM 7H0937090D (PR codes 8IH, 7L6, etc.).

In case of being new the BCM 7H0937090D has been replaced by BCM 7E0937089 or higher... search for the last model... 7E0937090C for Amarok.

The power supply is via terminal T73a/66 BCM... if the dome light or rear parking lights work do not need to check the fuse SC21 ...In short, your original electrical installation (with automatic lights) already provides such power.

I always get fault code for side lights on every scan. i do not know if this is because I have removed the original fron side light wire at headlight or if it is because it is not detecting the new wire correctly.
Make sure that the new terminals/wires you have inserted into the connectors for headlights and pink locking mechanisms are in the proper way (just like all other terminals)
I will check again now. I think the led needs full power on both drl and side light wire to work at full brightness and then a lower power on pin 10 (side light) to work at dimmed brightness. As they both work at full brightness I think wires are connected correctly
If I leave my byte 18 at 65 I do not get the bulb warning light on the dash. If I use 66 or 67 then I get the warning light come on.

All other functions seem to be working. I have dipped and high beam. High beam will 'flash' if I pull the stalk with all the lights off. The DRL will come on, full brightness with the light switch in '0'. It will also come on full bright in 'auto' (until auto turns dipped beam on) Perfect!!

DRL will turn off if I put the hand brake on. DRL will turn off (on one side only) when I use the indicator. Due to your BCM coding... :)
Yes. I set the coding myself to turn off with handbrake and I wanted it to dim with indicator but it goes off which is ok with me

In that case it does exactly what it has to do, ...due to the way your High beams (shutter) are wired (with/through a relay -J25-). Old way with 7H0 BCMs.
It must be enabled.

Yes, those faults are normal.
Not all BCMs behave in the same way. There are many factors to consider.

Once I have thoroughly reviewed all the Amarok wiring diagrams from 2009 to the present ... (yes, all of them, both eRwin and Elsawin) I can state the following.

1- The diagrams are more fun even than those from Polo 6R or Transporter ... haha ... these from Amarok are modified every 6 months, which means that even within a same Model Year and for the same equipment there may be differences to solve the problems, or installing new equipment...

2 - You are lucky because of the original electrical installation of your Amarok, with automatic lights and start-stop system from factory. This means you only have to add the two wires you've already added for front parking/side lighs. Remember to perfectly isolate the original wires/terminals you removed from the headlight connectors.

3- At 99% :) , you can say that the problems are due to how your original BCM is configured internally. (Firmware or even hardware)

4- The BCM coding that I told you previously is correct, the four faults in the BCM (last vcds scan) are because your BCM is not able to manage the Bixenon headlight Led modules.

Thus,
1- Check the wiring that you installed once again.
2- Install the correct units/drivers for the Led management according to ETKA, 'F', on both sides :wink: .
3- Install a suitable Amarok BCM. 7H0937090D or higher. This is a very simple step..., I recommend the latest model (7E0937090C) if you want to make further modifications in the future. :)
4- Enter the BCM coding that I told you.

Everything should work properly.


Curiosity:
Amarok Bixenon headlamps do not have automatic headlight range control (2009-2018).

Yes, I found this with the install of rear camera. Even tow bar changes many times and the towbar electrics i removed from same highline car but 1 year later needed wires changes to connect to mine!

I used adhesive heatshrink to cover the terminals. I use 2 layers!

I wonder if there is another part number of Led module that my bcm will control? Maybe not as bi-xenon headlight for amarok only released in 2016 and my BCM from 2012. However maybe other vw / audi car was running dimming Led in 2012?

I know the 'F' is the correct one but do you know what is between the 'G' and 'F'? As I said, I have 1x 'F' and 1x 'G' fitted and both sides function exactly the same. The 'F' has more pins in the connector but there are no ratings on either of the units

7H0937090D is available as used part although seller has not confirmed the full part number, only listed as compatible. 7E0937090C is only available as New part. I will keep looking. In Amarok it is a very big job to change BCM due to mounting. When I install the extra wires it took maybe 3-4 hours just to remove other parts in the way to access just the connector housing. Maybe only 1-2 more hours to remove and refit bcm though!
4- Enter the BCM coding that I told you.
Is there ever a case for wrong is right? Your coding works as expected. Errors as the BCM is wrong for the light units. In the case of my coding everything work the same (still not work correctly!!:) ) except I do not get the bulb warning light on the dash. Maybe the more wrong coding is better or maybe it will cause problems I do not see yet!?

It will do soon. I will fix this! until then, is there a coding I can use to make drl stay at full brightness with sidelights and headlights? I see that my bcm may not make my Led dim but I know my bcm will run them at full brightness I just need them to not try to dim.

No. Amarok Bi-Xenon have Ballast and Bulb both of 25w (normal xenon is 35w). The 25w is output of less than 2000Lumens so new rules state no leveling or headlight washers are required if output less than 2000lumens. Same as VW Beetle and some Ford cars. I had Osram Super bulbs in my halogen lights before I fit the Xenon lights. The Xenon are not much brighter but beam pattern is much sharper, light whiter and look cooler. :)

Today I plan to test the output from bcm with meter / scope. I also need to test with engine running as all I have done so far is check with key on and off. (Although I do need parking/side lights to work with key off!!)
I think my Byte16 Bit1-4 are all set to control by PWM. I think it maybe the case that PWM is only used if voltage goes above 12v to prevent over power to bulbs to improve life. I presume the half-brightness of the Led is controlled by PWM? At the moment I get 3.7v on a meter when they should be in Dim mode. I will see if this is a pwm output if I can find a scope.
I am thinking a possible solution may be to fit a pwm driver set at 50% power. I can feed this from the existing sidelight wire I removed from the headlight plugs. If I then fit a diode to the new wire (pin 10) then maybe I get the result without changing BCM?

IMHO:
I think first you should read (e.g, google) for what purpose the PWM (pulse width modulation) is used on the LEDs before you make any modification to increase the voltage... There is extensive information about it.

Whatever thing you do NO OEM will end badly, with faults on scans and/or gradual deterioration of original parts.
However, I am not against doing tests to acquire knowledge. Quite the opposite.

Note there are two control units before LED operation. BCM and the control unit for the LED module, and are parameterized for a perfect functioning of the LEDs. (flickering, illumination power, etc)
Remember that the parking/side lights is so that the other users of the road (all...) can see us.

The 'F' units (with more pins) replace the 'G' units. They are used by several VW Group models. Audi, VW, etc.
More pins = more functions (the functions depend on BCM model and its coding)

On the PQ25 platform they are used for both Bixenon headlamps and LED headlamps. T5, T6, 6C (pq26), Amarok...
6R does not use additional control units for LED modules.

I think I remember that Adam87 -T5.2- (a great friend, very kind ... and funny :) , and forum user) has a BCM 7H0937090D, ... maybe you both can take a couple of beers (spirit drink) while try/test his BCM on your Amarok.... and then (with positive results) come to an agreement on BCM sale.

I think you have been advised perfectly already, I do have a few BCM's but unfortunately not the one you need but more than willing to give them a try for you to see it at least it solves the problem. Then at least you know 100% you need a BCM. Where abouts are you?

@Ciclo, is the BCM currently installed not capable because of HW or SW? maybe edit EEPROM?
