Here's a challenge for the experienced techy mechanic/ auto electrician.

I recently fitted a secondhand engine into my 2004 Polo S 1.2 12V. It runs great!
However the secondhand engine doesn't have an electronic oil level sensor, but my original engine did!
So now the Engine warning light is on. Presumably because the ECU is still trying to look for a voltage value from the oil level sensor which obviously isnt detecting any oil because the sensor is dangling in fresh air or disconnected.

I'm not sure but I think it is a thermal activated sensor with three wires. From my poor memory they are (Black and Yellow) (Brown) (Brown and Green) Don't hold me to those colours I could be wrong. With the ignition on but engine not running the voltage readings at the cables connector are 11.7V 10.4V 0.0V. I'm guessing the 0.0V wire has to be earth.

My question is does anyone know whether I can short out the wires to fool the ECU the oil level is ok? Because I can still use the good old dip stick so why do i need it? It's just extra crap to go wrong. My concern is that I've seen VW engine fault codes worded "Implausable voltage" and "short to earth" so I'm worried just connecting one cable to another will either blow a fuse or throw up yet a different error code?
OR!
How can I de-code/remove the requirement to check oil level from the ECU programming?

Perhaps a silly question, but why do you want to remove the oil level sensor? Its used for alot more than just oil level as its a dynamic sensor not just on or off.

Shorting the wires together could result in ECU damage on a sensor like this

I havent got a choice the replacement engine aint got no ole to shove it in! LOL They are both AZQ engines but slightly different
It must be a slightly older engine than the one taken out.
Any ideas?

Ok, so apparently:

Bridge the number 1 and 3 connector with a wire or paperclip.

Use insulating tape or a plastic to cover the connector for dust and to cover the receiving end so it doesn't gather dust/moisture.

The wire numbers will be stamped on to the plug - normally at least number 1 and 3 are highlighted

Ok Yep I can remember that pin nos 1 & 3 are numbered so i will try that tonight and let you know.

Is there any risk of fusing or blowing the ECU?
