Polo 6N --> 6N2 swap

Post by JUUL »

WARNING: This thread is picture intensive :mrgreen:

Hello,

I'm Juul from the Netherlands. I've just registered because I own a 6N Polo which I've recently swapped to 6N2 engine, interior and electrics. To be honest, this forum helped me out a lot when trying to figure things out because I've never owned or worked on a 6N before. So I thought I'd give it a go. I'm no stranger to VW's or VW forums, I own a MK4 GTI as well and I'm an admin for the dutch VWForum.nl

This is how I bought the Polo a few months ago

Shortly after that I made a few subtle changes

Sadly, the engine had had it's best years. It was running rough and the head gasket was shot. I was planning on fixing the old gal, until I came across a 6N2 at the breakers. It landed at the breakers because it failed inspection due to bad wheel bearings and an airbag fault, other than that the car ran great. The deal was made really quick and the next day the donor was brought to my home. The teardown could begin...

The swap took just under two months to accomplish, so I'm really happy with the results. It was a real headache figuring out which parts could be used on the 6N, but at the end I swapped everything I wanted to swap. The Polo has now been brought to the 21st century whilst still keeping true to the 20th century look. Central locking, electric windows, electric (heated) mirrors, heated windscreen jet nozzles, 3rd brake light, power steering, upgraded subframe with anti roll bar and a modern interior. There are still some things to do before the 6N is completely done, but it's not much. I guess around next week she'll be ready, then I can finally take her to the dutch motor department to have all the changes registered.

Yesterday I've done the real first trip with the Polo, I drove for 150 kilometers and she behaved very well. I also went to the breakers yard and found all the 6N2 parts which were missing. The interior is now complete, the only missing parts are 6N headlights with electric height adjustment and the 6N rear hatch module for central locking. I'm still expecting a package from Germany with fog lights for the 2 piece front bumper.

Headlights with electric height adjustment are fitted and working perfectly. Made my own wiring loom adaptors because I didn't want to chop the original loom. The 6n headlight motors aren't the same as 6n2, so I had to find out each wire's function. Also found a leather steeringwheel and bought that as well.

My fog lights have finally arrived. I guess that will be the next update.

Another job done :mrgreen:

I must say that I'm really happy with the results. Just need some yellow (or gold) H3 bulbs for the fogs.

It took me a while but the car finally passed inspection. The new engine is now registered.

There won't be any significant updates regarding the Polo from now on. My eldest daughter has inherited the car and I've bought myself a new daily.
