MK2 Alternator Problem

Post by twoboys »

Hi guys and girls this is my first post on here so be gentle.

Right, OK, I own a 1984 Mk2 polo C with a 1.3 HK engine. The problem I have is that I need to fit it with a new alternator. The car is currently fitted with a BMW alternator (don't know why?) and the connections have been changed for that unit and don't match the fitment with the new 55amp one I ordered form the UK. I have provided photo links to the new unit but I have a number of questions that I would really love to be answered. Here's the pic links if there is a problem with your browser:

Questions I have are:

1> Is this even the correct alternator? (It's a 55 amp unit)
2> What cables fit to which connection? The BMW unit currently has two thick red leads and one thinner light coloured lead on an incompatible connection.
3> Is it better to source the proper connector and wiring and do a re-wiring job (ie back to origional) and if so, any ideas where I might be able to get the things I will need?
4> What is the black extra connection for on my new unit?

Only problem I really have is that I'm in Cyprus not the UK, so scrap yards are out. I can however order anything I need. I have peviously owned a few TR7's and older Fords so I'm not a total newbie but then again I'm no professional either LOL

Thanks in advance, I'm really pleased to be here!

Hi,

welcome to this forum. Only, it seems to be quiet now since a few months.

Unfortunately, I cannot read your pictures because the company filter says "Acces denied. Adult content."

That happens sometimes even with work-related links.

I would need now to go for a computer normally reserved for visitors. There I can see even "adult content" .... But I wouldn't know much to say to the wiring anyhow, so I leave this out.

I got on my 1984 MK2 1.05 GL Polo an alternator that is slightly wrong, too. It is an alternator for a VW Polo but the belt size is wrong. If you fit first the alternator and then the belt (that is what is the proper way) then I can only fit a belt that is slightly too long and it works but the belt doesn't have enough tension.
If I try to fit a belt with proper tension, then I have to fit the belt first and with 3 hands  I have then to fit the bolts for the alternator.

As far as I remember right there was a change with the alternators just in the middle of the year 1984, so I think you would need the engine number to properly order an alternator.

I am telling you this because I think it is not that easy to order or get the right one. Is it not possible to get the appropriate BMW alternator again?

I got wrong parts in my cars, too, apart from that Polo alternator. For example, our Citroen BX has a diesel filter from Ford. I guess it has been over a decade ago that a former neighbour who ran a Ford garage but drove a Citroen BX fitted this Ford filter because it didn't want to order the Citroen filter.
The downside is that I cannot prime this filter but I found a workaround, so I can live with this.
