The GTI is offically here!

Post by dxg »

Here's the press release:
NEW POLO GTI TO BE UNVEILED AT TOKYO MOTOR SHOW

Volkswagen has today unveiled first details and images of the most powerful production Polo to date, the new Polo GTI. The high performance Polo will make its international debut at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show in Chiba City, Japan, later this month.

The hottest version of Polo will be powered by the 1.8-litre turbo-charged petrol engine already seen in other Volkswagen cars. In Polo GTI specification, the engine will produce 150 PS whilst torque will hit 220 Nm. This makes the Polo GTI capable of 0-62 mph in only 8.2-seconds and a top speed of 134 mph.

Externally, there is no mistaking the ‘baby brother’ styling cues taken from the successful and multi-award winning Golf GTI. Sporty 16-inch alloy wheels, bright red brake calipers, visible polished exhaust tail pipes, rear spoiler, a 15mm lower stance on sports suspension and the legendary GTI logo on a honeycomb style-grille will clearly mark the most sporting Polo to date.

On the inside, sports seats and aluminium detailing sit alongside black and red stitched seat belts and a three-spoke leather covered steering wheel.

The Polo GTI has inherited visible elements of DNA from the Golf GTI and the equipment list and specification revealed so far point to a striking small-car package.

Pricing, performance and detailed UK specification will be announced closer to launch.
And here are some images (apols for imageshack).

Nice timing - I'm collecting my (non-VAG) 9N replacement today - doh!

Deek.

Hmmm.

I wonder how much it would cost to create a GTI look-like?

I'm loving the front grill, wheels, red calipers, rear spoiler, lowered springs, twin exit exhaust, not to mention all the interior goodies.

Not to sound petty but only 5 gears?

What does the Ibiza FR have? as that is the equivalent.

or 160lbft

which, for a 1.8T, isn't that high! I bet once chipped that thing will fly

I wonder if the packaging on the polo doesn't allow for the 6-speed gearbox

I totally agree with you on that note. The silver looks like an afterthought.

Yep its a shame, the silver spoils it (IMO) especially since everything else
is on the mark: steering wheel, gear knob, dark grey plastics, speedo, and the seats are awesome!

Thought id get one next, until I realised that a secondhand Golf GTI mk5
would probably fit into the same price range...hhumm!?

Maybe I wont be getting one after all! :?

Yeah, I think from about 2002 onwards the Lupo gti had a 6 speed gearbox.
