You just unplug the airbox and whack it straight on to the throttle body, 10 minute job to fit.

You do not do this. Not at all. Tony has a 1.8t for a start!
You take the airbox out and attach the filter to the MAF/TIP. It also looks like it comes with a cold air feed which may or may not be better than standard you'll have to ask someone else about that bit.

That's what the K&N instructions had on it?
What have I done wrong?

The biggest problem with that setup is there is no feed of cold air as such. The position of that filter allows it to use all the surrounding air from the engine, which will be hot.

Yeah I thought that, I do have some hoses on the way so I can place it in the gap on the left and have the cold air hose pointing directly towards it.
These are similar to the instructions I followed (these seems to be for the 9n not the 9n3): http://www.knfilters.com/instructions/57-0530_inst.pdf

Ideally you want to pipe it to somewhere near the wing or front of the car so it can get a good cold supply.

There you go,

• remove the air box lid and filter
•fit cone filter to the MAF allowing filter to sit in the box
•Job done

Now you can remove the whole air box but you will lose your cold air feed from the front of your car, so I recommend leaving it there to minimalise heat soak

This is good advice!

I just meant that it is totally irrelevant for Tony's engine that was all :)
