Radio reception woes

Hi guys hi girls!
I hope for my sanity someone can help me!
The rubber grommet of my Polo 9n3 aerial was perished so I set about replacing it. I unplugged and removed the aerial, to clean around the hole in the roof. Anyway i put it back together in reverse order. Turned on the radio... nothing but white noise, Ive tried a new aerial, nothing.. again!
If i hold the centre core with a long nose pliers perfect reception wtf!? Doesnt make any sense at all, im very good with cars, electric and such but this has me stumped. Apparently this is very Common and nobody I have spoken to so far has found a solution. The nut on the aerial seems to be earthing fine, I just dont know what to do.
