whats the best camera to buy for someone with virtually no photography knowledge and not a huge budget

You looking to buy with the intentions of getting into Photography? Or just something that will point and shoot?

Hhmm..

If you want inter changable lenses, there's the Canon 1000D, Panasonic GF-1, Panasonic GH-1 (little pricey).

All good cameras. You may never grow out of them.

However, if your after a compact camera (not my strong point as I've never needed them), Your probably best off suggesting a couple, an I could point out what's good and what's not.

There's the Canon PowerShot line, and Panasonic Lumix, they're good.
