Petrol tank sender/ tank hole

Post by oldgit70 »

Hello, just joined. Hope this post is in the right place.
My daughter has a 1990 Polo "Breadvan" Country. We have struggled to fit a new petrol tank from ATP in Germany. The final struggle is to fit the tank sender unit. It doesn't want to go on.Rather, it goes in but won't turn to lock in place. It looks to me like the serrations at the sender hole are slightly different between the original tank and the replacement tank.
Can anybody help please?
Thanks.

Welcome

have you got a link to the petrol tank you ordered, and the part number of the sender you are using?

Hello. This is the tank
PETROL FUEL TANK VW DERBY 1.3 09.84-12.84 POLO 86C 1.0-1.3 84-94 on eBay. It is the one with the two pipes at the bottom.
The sender is a VDO with number 8679 19051A.
The original tank has 6 slots which are "raised". The replacement tank has 6 slots which are not raised, so I'm now thinking the fault lies with the O ring supplied. Maybe it is too thick? The sender goes back into the original tank OK, but refuses to turn in the new tank.
The ATP tanks seem good quality and value for money but don't expect ANY customer assistance from them!

I see your problem

You have a carb engine, as the sender number states

The listing however states:
Only suitable for petrol fuel injection engines and DIGIJET carburettors (TWC)
Not for diesel or carburettor enginges!
The part number for the tank you require is either 867 201 075C or 867 201 075G depending on what you have fitted now (the latter is a narrow neck for unleaded fuel vs leaded)
