Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
Has anybody installed the spare wheel well version with the spare wheel present?
I'm debating getting the alternate version:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Subwo ... B00NUYQV9W
They appear to be completely identical other than one for the spare wheel well and the other in the boot.
I would rather keep my spare than lose it personally. I doubt there is any audio quality difference.
EDIT: I may have answered my own question. My SEL comes with the variable boot floor and has about 14cm of space in the compartment beneath. I could arguably just sit it there and leave the spare wheel where it is so I think I will go with that!

So to clarify, you're going for the round one? The bar is intriguing because I cannot find it now in any accessory brochures... and it is slightly cheaper. Personally I will probably go for the round one, just need to justify the cost and get it done!

Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
Hi Marky,
I went for the round one and fitted it yesterday. It sits neatly under the variable boot floor and above the spare wheel well, meaning I can keep my spare wheel and not lose any boot space. I did have to remove the feet and put on slightly lower profile feet to ensure the variable boot floor sat flush.
I ended up buying it from Germany on eBay who pre-programmed it for my Polo - meaning I didn't have to worry about any of that - just wire it in and off I go!
I have a 3 door 6C, needed to remove glovebox , lower a pillar trim, and door sill. I kept the rear side trim on and just pushed the wiring loom under using trim tools, then it is coiled under my rear seat before running into the boot.
Sounds ace - very pleased!

Interesting. I cannot find anything about retrofitting the variable boot floor. Did you order the Helix from eBay?

Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
With the battery housed in the spare wheel well on the GTI, and the spare wheel stored on top of the battery, this raises the height of the stored spare wheel compared to other 6c Polo models. So is there enough space for the Helix plug and play amp to fit between the top of the spare wheel and the underside of the boot floor which is already (permanently) in the upper position on the GTI?

Good question, and I didn't know that. I'm not at home so cannot checkSRGTD wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2017 12:37 pm With the battery housed in the spare wheel well on the GTI, and the spare wheel stored on top of the battery, this raises the height of the stored spare wheel compared to other 6c Polo models. Yes, the GTI already has the "variable boot floor" fitted.

I believe it looks like these images above. The sub is capable of fitting over the battery and under the "variable" boot floor which sits on the plastic pieces on either side of the boot. In my polo which has a traditional spare wheel there is a void between the spare wheel well and the variable boot floor, and I placed it there.
I bought from this dealership in Germany as they pre-programmed it for me. Cost £9 more than buying direct from my dealer, but they then wanted another £36 to programme it for me!

I should have said ‘does this raise the height of the stored spare wheel compared to other 6c Polo models? (I can’t check this out for you just now as my car’s at home and I’m not!) - I’m assuming it does as there’s no provision to put the boot floor in the lower position. However, this might solely be due to the location of polystyrene tray for storing the jack / wheel brace etc. being in the space that in non GTI models would enable you to put the boot floor into the lower position. Normally, the tool kit would be stored in the spare wheel well but in the GTI it can’t because of the battery location.marky9074 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2017 2:55 pmGood question, and I didn't know that. Thanks for that. Same link as I was going to buy from, so good to know. I was quoted GBP 450 for supply and fit I think. I didn't realise you could buy it as a part from the dealer.Oli3000 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2017 3:20 pm Yes, the GTI already has the "variable boot floor" fitted.

Yep they quoted me £357 for the unit and £465 fully installed.marky9074 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2017 4:01 pmThanks for that. Same link as I was going to buy from, so good to know. It took me about an hour and a half to do.
I bought these other pieces for fitting:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12pcs-Plastic ... 2749.l2649
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3x-Car-Termin ... 2749.l2649
I have a 3 door so I removed the followings items:
Passenger rear seat bench (just squeeze the arms together when it is up)
Passenger sill (http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/ ... r_models)/)
Lower A pillar below glovebox (http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/ ... ger_side)/)
Glovebox side panel (http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/ ... end_trims/)
Glovebox (http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/ ... mpartment/)
Before I removed the glovebox I partially slid out the MIB unit as it makes accessing the cables easier, but I did not completely remove it.
I did NOT remove this panel:
http://workshop-manuals.com/volkswagen/ ... side_trim/
It looked bloody complex and unnecessary, I just removed the bolt under the rear seat and fed the cabling up behind the panel, using my trim tools to lever it up in places.
I then ran the loom from the glovebox, under the sill (adjacent to the existing wiring loom), behind the rear side panel, under the back seat where I coiled the extra, and into the space under the variable boot floor.
Followed the cabling instructions as per this video:

Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
Thanks for that. I have a decent set of trim tools now having installed the armrest, but I'd forgotten about needing the terminal tool. I noticed when I first looked at the German page it said that the longer mounting thread and bypass dongle were extra. Did you get/need these?
Cheers,
Mark

Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
The alternative mounting thread only matters if you are mounting it in place of the actual spare wheel. So not relevant to a GTI or if you are going to keep the spare wheel. The "bypass dongle" refers to a plug that you can attach to the wiring loom so that your radio still works if you need to remove the unit for any reason! I can't see any need for that with the spare wheel version.marky9074 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2017 9:55 am Thanks for that. Right I think I get what you are asking.
In a non-gti the variable boot floor is capable of being in the lower position making the boot deeper. In the GTI this is not possible due to the polystyrene tray as you mention and therefore the GTIs boot is permanently in the raised position.
In my non-GTI I have installed it between the normal boot floor and the raised boot floor of the variable piece. Keeping my spare wheel intact and just losing 6" or so of boot space which I never actually used!
Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
Guys, I have the programming dongle back now if anyone needs it, as still renting out with terminal pin removal tool. Cheers

Re: Plug and Play Sound system (Sub and Amp)
Sorry to revisit this, but just got around to fitting. So do I also need the special tools/keys to pull out the infotainment system (or does it come out when the glove box comes out?
