but i fitted a unit from a newer model polo.

every thing was working fine (bluetooth was showing connected and also app connect was working) but it had component protection

I've just got back from getting component protection removed

now bluetooth is not working for audio or telephone and it is now saying app connect needs a key (bit of a kicker but i was kinda expecting it not to have it to start with)

anyone know why a lot of functions have stopped working after getting component protection removed?

which model unit did you buy? im looking to do the same with my 2015 gti as well

sorry to bombard you with questions

was it just plug and play apart from the CP removal?
any wiring changes needed?
what year car did you get yours from?
did you have to change the head unit as well? ive found one from a 2017 tiguan and the seller has stated i would have to change the head unit
if not did your head unit have the mute or voice button bottom left?

ive been speaking to vw and they have said that it is impossible which has made me skeptical when obviously it can be done since you have done it :|

The head unit (the unit in the glove box)is the bit that changes the screen can stay as it is.

The unit I got was dated 2017 so a lot newer than my polo.

My screen does have voice bottom left button.

You can plug a unit in to see if it works as you will get full functionality apart you will have no sound. So if can get one cheap enough it is worth going for.

Don't listen to vw as they are not really clued up on retrofit stuff

Thanks mate. Great info

I've found a cheap one just waiting to see if it has the app connect functionality. Surely all models with that model number should have it so I might just wing it

Yeah those units should have app connect

The 3q0035820 unit is the one without app connect.

If you replace in the "head unit" in the glovebox, does it need coding into the car? Is this why you didn't get audio from the speakers?

Thanks!

(In the process of buying a BlueGT after being active on here WAY back in the early naughties... Amazed the account still works!)

The component protection is what stops the audio (makes a stolen unit useless)

It doesn't need coding it is what vw call FeC's

So needs plugging in to the vw database to say what features you should have and tell the unit to switch them on.

Ah, so I can get a second hand 3Q0035874A (which seems to have app-connect in it already...) off ebay and get my local specialist to code it in then... Spoke to them - they were a bit hesitant but one of their branches has a guy who's more into this stuff so I guess it's a £200+labour gamble, then. Just worried about things like bluetooth not working, plus I have parking sensors.

To clarify, the FECs are the three letter codes off the car's data sticker? Is that right, or will the ODIS machine log into VW and get it all straight off the VIN or something???

Cheers!

Is that the nav unit?

App connect will be wiped as your car does not have it to start with.

The FeC codes are to do with what options get switched on in the unit. Odis will check the database as to what your car had from factory (I guess via the vin) and give the ok to the unit to switch back on the original options.

Yeah, the part is just for the bit in the glovebox.

I had thought it would just be a case of somehow finding the right code from this list and adding it to the vehicle, somehow! http://vag-codes.info/files/options/vag ... -codes.pdf

I had heard of features being added just through coding.

Seems a bit mean on VW's part...

But thanks for the head's up.

Yeah I took the plunge but it has only cost £180 all in to get to the point where I just need the code now.

I have read that the usb port might be different but I really can't see that as even the lower units can read data off a usb stick.

Dink wrote: Sun Mar 11, 2018 3:50 pm Ahh that's the same company that removed my component protection. I might have to give them a call and see what they say.

I've got a VCDS cable so I've got a copy of the coding of my original unit and the new unit (before and after CP)

Then just compared them and made changes to see if they work.

But the bluetooth I could not get to work so I think there might be a bcm upgrade/update required.
how long did they take to remove the CP and get everything sorted? im booked in with them on thursday

It took literally 10 mins to do.

They understand that they need to re-enabled bluetooth and everything?

I'm sure if they get it right they could get a lot more custom.

You getting app connect upgrade aswell?
