Correct oil for GTI 1800 6c?

Post by fivelittlefish »

I was wondering what is the correct spec oil for the new 1800 6c GTI - I've done about 2K miles and it needs a bit of a top up.
Thank you.

It should be written in your service book.

Castrol 0w30, all the Way. Unless you plan on the 20k service interval.

Thank you.

See, this is why I'm confused - my service book lists the car as Q16, which is the flexible service interval.

So, which oil should I be putting in it to top up? TBH, I'm not that keen on going for 2 years with the same oil in it - I'll be asking for an oil change at 1 year. So should I top up with the 5w/30 or the 0w/30 ?

Quantum LongLife III 5W30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil is the recommended VAG oil
Advertised on ebay for £25.91 inc delivery for 5l
If you know a friendly mechanic he can get the same from TPS- not sure about price (more cost effective getting 20l container)
Similar/same as 5W30 Castrol edge

Since the oil temperature in city driving easily exceeds 105 oC and the 5-30 is a thin oil, is there a reason to worry about oil becoming water in our warm designed Ea888? I am not so happy with the manual intervals as well and I plan on frequent changes...

I'm also on the long-life interval and my oil change light came on for about 12k. Garage said it didn't need changing but I went ahead and had the oil service anyway (£169!) as I'm not happy leaving the oil that long either. I'd put about 0.5 litre of oil in during the 12k I have done.

I also got them to update the software for the radio as it'd been playing up, and the handbrake had a lot of travel which was adjusted too. Overall I'm much happier it having been in, especially as it gives them a chance to make any 'unadvertised' updates where needed. It does feel better for the service, but that is probably just imaginary as it was going fine before it.

Rather that what oil. I'd be mote concerned about why oil.

Unless your engine runs at the limiter all day it shouldn't need oil that quick.

If you have checked the level properly, some can't. I'd be monitoring its use. Should not need filled after just 2000 miles

I meant to mention that too. It needs to be checked when warm - not cold. Read the handbook to find out how it should be read.

Any 5W30 fully synthetic oil that is 504/507 approved will be fine.

What is the correct service interval for the gti? Mine is year old and says I still have year to go for oil service? Is that right?

I did not realise there is long life interval as well on the 1.8 gti

Pretty certain the default service regime from the factory is flexible/long life, where the first oil change service is the sooner of 24 months or a maximum of 18,000.

I had mine changed to time and distance as I have a service plan and I’m also a low mileage driver (time and distance is recommended by VW for low mileage owners). Under the service plan the service intervals are the sooner of 12 months or 10,000 miles.
