Sun Roof... Yes or No ?

Post by Mark37 »

I've always liked the idea of a sun roof in a car, but having never had one I'm unsure of the pros and cons.

I'm currently leaning towards a Polo Gti and I quite fancy having one with a sunroof.

Is this a good or bad idea and what are peoples experiences in general ?

Thank you.

it's one of the few things that you can't retrofit. so I would go for it...

No!

Adds weight, chassis flex and more ways for water to get in.

So unless you like using your car to park up and star-gaze, I'd leave that box unticked!

Handy in hot weather if you want to turn the engine off when parked.

Ability to remotely open roof before you return to a superheated car.

Extra light through the glass roof makes interior less tomb like.

Helps you to see stupidly positioned traffic lights without circling your neck.

Adds to resale value.

Looks better, well I think so anyway.

Useful if you have to release a racing pigeon.

Theoretical reduction in stiffness but I'd defy you to notice it let alone measure it.

End of the day it's personal choice but it's handy if the air con fails or your passenger is car sick, or worse!

I have a Polo GTI with the pan roof...

definitely aint cheap but I don't regret getting it... keeps the car nice and cool... makes the car much lighter in side.

Adds to the re-sale value with out a doubt...

just do what I did and get it cause I could :)

I have one on my citigo but didn't spec on my new gti as had a few issues and extra squeaks due to body flex and it not closing as the pinch detection is very sensitive!, it is a very nice "extra" but not an essential. Again does add a bit of weight to the car (about 100kg with all the motors and glass but shouldn't really affect performance. If you like the black roof look, it's cheaper to get a vinyl that lasts for 5-10 years :)

Just my 2 pence worth :)

Moving off topic but referring to the last posting.

Having experienced many cars with stuck on vinyl roofs I'd caution against them, they degrade in sunlight and allow water to permeate which corrodes the roof surface without any outward signs.

An absolute walk away factor for me but they used to be popular back in the day and as Morse's Jaguar Mk2 showed they provide an easy way to tart up a scrapper.

Sunroof all the way with t he winter pack to open on cold bright days, never had a car without a roof and usually defines the cars to buy at the end of the day. But down to you [emoji16]

Absolutely yes, at the end of the day unless you're constantly keeping her pinned you won't worry about chassis flex as well as manufacturers make cars stronger now to combat this

I've recently ordered a new GTI (in white) and opted for the sunroof, amongst other things! Main reason for me is to bring extra light into the cabin. From pictures the black sunroof and the white body colour adds an appealing contrast, but thats just my personal taste. Hope it works in practice when I finally get the car.
