New speeding fines

Post by Fox1429 »

On returning from holiday gutted to find a letter regarding speeding waiting for me!

Got pinged doing 42 in a 30 zone (which is between two 40mph zones locally)!

I have no points so gutted with this but the law is the law!

My question is regarding the new speeding fines that have recently come in.

I have read a few articles as well as the Gov site but it isn't clear at to whether this falls into the %weekly wage fines or does this only count if the matter goes to court?

It all seems to be written as 'Magistrates discression' which suggests that it would be the standard fine/points unless you contest it or already have points (as this would be the only time you go to court).

Just not really very clear anywhere.

Any ideas?

Well, what does the letter say? Does it say "summons to court" or does it have a fixed penalty notice?

As far as I understand it the new fines are aimed at those who are charged in court.

Hi Fox1429. Agree it does seem a little confusing as the Government website still makes reference to the 'standard' £100 fine and 3 points - maybe this is an option for the police / magistrates to apply in certain situations for minor speeding offences?

Does the letter you've received indicate what the next steps are and what options are available to you (e.g. accept the offence and plead guilty, contest the offence)?

It was just the NIP to confirm you were the driver and that you accept/dispute the offence.
Have sent it back. Hopefully it will be a FPN and the minimum fine/points as opposed to court.

You might be offered the opportunity to attend a speed awareness course.

I was offered the awareness course.
Suprised but happy to do that before the points!
