Introducing my Lightning McQueen LM95

Post by ag69 »

Hi there Friends,

On occasion of Disney Pixar Cars3 release today, let me all introduce you all to my Lightning McQueen

I have been follower of this forum for few years now. Only recently I became a member and thought of introducing my LM95 and sharing some of beautification I have done with you all.
Though writing all names here would not be possible but C,C,B,I are some of members on this forum, G,G,F,R from Indian and many from Russian forums are special inspiration for me. And others as well.

Here is some background --

VW Launched Polo back in India sometime in 2009. It was 1.2 lit 3 cylinder Petrol and Diesel manual options. All the excitement disappeared as soon as I started both engines as part of test drive.
Only good part was both vehicles had many parts from VW Worldwide suppliers. And fit and finish was a step above from rest of cars offered by other manufactures’.
Here is how that polo looked.

Fast forward to 2012 and finally VW launched Polo GT TSi (1.2 TSi, 105BHP, 7DSG) and GT TDI (1.5 Diesel, 105BHP, 5 Manual). Being in UK and driving 1.2 TSi, I was hooked onto it for quite some time. But VW did not make too many facial changes to distinguish between its cheaper siblings.

Still I went to check the vehicle once back home. I won’t write anything about dealer experience but car was FUN!!!
Work kept me busy and traveling so could not fulfill my wish to buy 1st GT in my city or from dealer.
Two odd years passed by and VW decided to facelift it again.

And finally my dream car was there. It was just matter of doing paperwork.
I was very demanding and managed to get my car in 15 odd days delivered after making a payment. (Some of you may know how people are taken for ride)

Very frankly I was so excited that I hardly did any checks on allocated car in details.
My only condition for delivery was to have a delivery early morning and in broad day light so I can admire every millimeter of it and drive whole day :)

As part of cost cutting VW ditched many but here are which would have been good to have:
  • Option of music system
  • Reverse camera
  • 5th allow wheel
  • Only 1 flip key (1 normal key)
  • Single tone horn
  • No light in boot
Sadly none of these things are offered even at dealer level.
Or charged exorbitant price for some of the things.

One thing to note is dealers absolutely have very less powers to do anything. Or they are simply not willing to.
So you ask and they would say "warranty would be void", "this is not possible". If ever any of these service advisers reads this forum, I am sure they would like to hide their faces.

Here are some which I am planning to do in next few weeks ---> has becomes years now
  • Engine Bonnet struts -- > Done
  • Steerign Wheel with paddles-- > Done
  • A pillar twitter-- > Done
  • Rear and Boot foot well lights -- > Done
  • Dual Tone Horn -- > Done
  • Headlight Washer System
  • GTI Bumper

One failure faced till now is Flip Key.
So i procured an uncut same make/specification key from Russia. I got it cut from locksmith.
Mechanically it could lock and unlock.
So i took it to program at VW Service Station (knowing they wont)
They tried but somehow they could not get it working,

After entering number of keys in their system
and subsequently inserting and turning ignition on, we could program 2 of original keys.
But 3 key could not be.
I could see message 1-3, 2-3 but 3rd one refused to.
We also tried to change sequence but the aftermarket key just wont let program.

So I would be really happy to get it working. Any suggestions are welcome.

Played and did my first tweak using VCDS.
Enabled Gauge Sweep.

Following method/navigation is the found for Gauge Sweep on forums:
17 Instruments -- > Coding -- > Function 10
Byte 1
Enable bit 10

Somehow with VCDS 17.1.3.0 software version usual/mentioned path on various forums is not there.

But remembered word "indicator celebration" and searched and found it.
Just changed value to "active" and "Do it"

this is snippet from VCDS Logs:

Address 17,6RF 920 860 Q,channel ENG112417-indicator_celebration,adapted from,not active ,to,active
Here is video of end result:

Finally got some time to add engine bonnet struts.
Used two struts on either side of engine bay.
Necessary 4 ball stud joints for ends
and SS part with holes.
Here are details of the struts and ball joints:
http://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-stru ... 5-220-260#
http://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-stru ... -ball-stud

Got "L" shaped SS bracket made at local fabrication place - to fit them to bonnet bolts.
Needed to fiddle a bit to get it fitting on one side as the bracket was bent a bit.

Followed these steps:
  • Unlock and Open the engine bay and rest it on support.
  • Remove the M6 screw inside engine bay on either side on fender part near to headlight.
  • You would need to have washer since the removed screw has washer attached.
  • Screw in one of the ball joints.
  • Unscrew one of two nut of the bonnet hinge.
  • Put the angled SS and lock it with removed nut.
  • Insert ball joint to other side.
Now this is bit tricky to do. You may need helping hand.
  • Put the strut on fender side first. Then lift bonnet further and try to put gas strut onto ball joint near hinges. You may have push and use some force.
  • Put locking pins for the ball joint on either side.
  • Now carry out same steps on other side of bonnet

and you are done.
With this engine bonnet opens bit more than normal.
Access is free and wide from all 3 sides.

Once bonnet is unlocked, unlatched from locking mechanism after bit of lift, it just goes like crazy.
I made sure to keep a hang on top till it reached maximum height.

Here is videos: Observation after using it few weeks:
Though I attached struts few weeks back. I could record a video over the weekend. Meanwhile i used this bonnet struts few times. I noticed that SS angle and gas struts were rubbing against each other. So had to file the SS part and it was all good. However advise to all is to use a washer on either side of SS. So your assembly should be like: Ball joint, Washer, SS, Washer and nut. There is enough space so that gas struts aligns/rest without touching outside side of A fender.

Assuming renaming and saving it appropriate folder would work on your 330g+

A question to all here:
Can we change/replace a RHD - right/driver door key cap (6R4837879 -- it has hole to insert a key) with one without hole?
I could not find a part number. But would a LHD Polo 6R (models with radio remote control central locking system) passenger door can be fitted?

HI All experts,

Hopefully going to get some free time in next weekend or so. Hence have few DIY lined up assuming I get all hardware and information.

Currently i have a flat bottom steering wheel - 6C0419091. It does not have cruise control buttons and paddles in back. I was/am dying to get a steering with paddle shifts. After searching a lot of steering i found following :
  • 5G0419091DK from passat
-- https://rar-carparts.com/en/carmodels/v ... ft-paddles
Image
  • 5TA419091B from Touran
-- https://www.callparts.de/en/fahrzeugtei ... 5ta419091b
Image
Kept on searching Polo 6R steering photos and reading ETKA and finally bought
  • 6C0419091H
Image

The reason to buy this steering was -- i found it exact same with the airbag spring latches, holes at base of steering and those black colored parts.
Here are ref images of existing flat bottom steering:
Image

There are some Polo owners, who have changed steering to golf with round airbag. But steering plus airbag costs a bomb.
Following itka links sort of confirmed (in theory) that this steering would fit for 2015 model year car.

A topic viewtopic.php?f=56&t=69864&p=521665#p521665made me jump up and down - thinking I can replace my existing steering. So PM few but i could not get ALL information and so i am posting here.
1) with my 6R0937087R BCM (434MHz), can i get this new steering working with all buttons and lights? most important is Paddles.
2) Do I need to upgrade to 7E0937090 BCM?
3) If yes then does BCM need to be brand new or one from used car can work?
4) Does it need to be from petrol vehicle for same engine series?

Also lying around are A pillar tweeters - 6R6867233
Image
(https://goo.gl/photos/7Jth9Tytj3dyhaGr8)
and I have a RCD 320 music system.
Image
Found more than one links on drive2.ru but could not understand wiring part. They said splice a cable for FL and FR (inside door) and connect the respective side tweeter wires.
Would this work? If not how can i get it working? Where to connect?
These tweeter have "1J0 971 972" connector, so can using a male "3B0 972 712" connector or any such would help?
Image

Currently I have 6Q0 953 653 (without cruise buttons).
Can I replace with 6C0953501P? I know these have cruise buttons but it is more of would they fit? or what all needs to be changed?

The pictures don't work but if you do right click -> open in new tab, it works.
May I ask you to consider a host that allows hotlinking of images? i.e. imgur.com

So for anyone that couldn't follow like me:
Polo 6R, indian spec (TS please confirm, your introduction is nice but it doesn't make clear to me what it is. the red one looks like a 6C bumper but headlights say 6R)
BCM 6R0 937 087 R

For the steering wheel, the four questions:

1) with my 6R0937087R BCM (434MHz), can i get this new steering working with all buttons and lights? most important is Paddles.

Yes, you can get the buttons to work. I'm not sure about the lighting. Also I'm not sure about the paddles.
I've seen some people retrofit a Golf Mk6 steering wheel with paddles. That works perfectly fine. Follow the guide at the DIY section by Der Finne.
Read the entire thread and note that LIN can be obtained much easier at the A pillar connector, for the door wiring loom.
I suspect the 6C0 steering wheel will work in the same way.

2) Do I need to upgrade to 7E0937090 BCM?

See 1. I don't know exactly. Upgrading to BCM Max requires a lot of other work in re-wiring all the lighting of your car.
See the for sale section of ciclos BCM Max iring.

3) If yes then does BCM need to be brand new or one from used car can work?
4) Does it need to be from petrol vehicle for same engine series?

Any BCM 7E0 937 090 will work, used/new, any engine.

bonus:
They said splice a cable for FL and FR (inside door) and connect the respective side tweeter wires.
Would this work? If not how can i get it working? Where to connect?

you can splice either directly at the radio connector (quadlock) or in the A-pillar connector for the door.
The latter one is the easiest to reach.

Currently I have 6Q0 953 653 (without cruise buttons).
Can I replace with 6C0953501P? I know these have cruise buttons but it is more of would they fit? or what all needs to be changed

No the intermittent wiper switch for sure will not work. Furthermore you'll also need to replace the steering angle sensor (if there is even such a one) and replace a lot of connectors. I would not recommend to do this.

Thank you for quick reply iichel.
Sure, will try your suggested site for photos.

Yes you are right.
Headlights are double barrel/twin headlights like 6R
Front and rear bumper are like 6C
VW India has a parts bin which is very confusing.
I assume this answers/clears your doubt.
I have not changed any body parts yet. So the car is what came out of VW factory.
