Timing chain

Post by Rjt36 »

Hello, my first post. I hope someone can advise, please. I’ve just bought a 2009 Polo 1.2 Match that has done just over 15000 miles. It’s been serviced by VW regularly until last year. Would anyone know if the Timing chain (assume it doesn’t have a belt?) needs to be replaced? It doesn’t look as if anything has been done with it, to date. Thank you very much.

Hi, welcome to this forum!

That engine will have a timing chain, but as that is a late version of that engine, I'd guess that all the nasty badly designed aspects of the older/earlier engines will have been superseded so everything should be okay. As a rule, timing chains do not need to be replaced until they get noisy, so if your one is still quiet it should be okay to leave alone.

Though, as that engine has chain damper assemblies, maybe some one with experience of these engines can post on what to expect at 15K miles, and what is considered good preventative maintenance around that drive chain area.

Edit:- 15K miles, that is low for a 2009 car, is that true mileage - you can check on the "MOT history checker" website for mileages at 2012, 2013, 2014 etc etc.

Thank you - that’s helpful.

Yes, the mileage is true......thank you for the prompt, though.

That average annual mileage beats even mine, my 2011 S4 has just passed 22K!
