Engine pre-heater ?

Post by Eduard »

So now that winter is coming, and for us diesel users, it can cause some issues, I was wondering if there is some engine block pre-heating solution, or someone maybe retrofitted the auxiliary heater ? ( though I think that one requires AC which I don’t have ).

Any suggestions of some solutions? after market or OEM, does not matter.

Thanks!

unless you're living in the artic circle, i don't think an engine heater is necessary. i'd probably go for seat heating before engine heating.

I was just reading about how it reduces fuel consumption, and various reasons, so I was just wondering.

As for the seat heating, I'm working on it just now, will start a new topic regarding the 6C in a few.

yes it will have a positive effect on fuel consumption but the electricity has to come from somewhere else... :-)
I'm in Switzerland where it's about 0 degrees right now and the engine takes some time to heat up but it will cope.

Meh, it's not a must for me, was just wondering how easy or hard it is to accomplish. I'll just drop it, seat heaters for the win.

The VW system is a Webasto, unfortunately the polo’s don’t have it, it’s just the standard air-con in some like the Passat, T4/6 vans and a few others and for them it’s just a case off fitting a £48 receiver.

You could just go outside and start the car while you’re eating breakfast like I do

If you do this and your car is stolen while it’s left with the keys in the ignition and engine running, your insurer is unlikely to pay out as pretty much all UK insurers exclude theft under these circumstances. This is the exclusion in my insurance policy, and I dare say you’ll have a similar exclusion in yours;

We will not pay for loss or damage arising from theft while:
(a) the ignition keys of your vehicle have been left in or on your vehicle.
(b) your vehicle has been left unattended with the engine running.

It’s also illegal in UK to leave a car unattended with the engine running in a public place. The definition of public place is very wide, it could include your drive or “private” forecourt.

Doubt they'll be getting up at 5am to get mine  , plus the insurance would have to prove the key was in the car and not stolen from the household which would be very hard, but I fully understand the reasoning I'm out with no one around me for a few miles so.

Also for anyone after an engine pre-heater from kufatec there's this €709 + postage.

https://www.kufatec.de/shop/en/search?keywords=webasto

So should give you all a good lead onto what you'll be looking for if you choose to salvage parts from a 2005 passat etc
