1.2TSI Resonator Delete Info

Post by Jay-Jay »

Hi everybody,
I'm thinking about deleting the resonator (a.k.a. middle silencer), but I have one big doubt.
Will I have a loss of torque at low rpm?

Actually my engine has;
- Pipercross air filter;
- bigger intake hose from Polo 6R GTI;
- OEM muffler from Polo 6R GTI;
- ECU custom remap.

After all these mods, I dynoed the car (4th gear) and it showed a very good result:
Image
As you can see, I have almost all of the Torque already at about 2100 rpm (the peak at about 2600). And I really like that!

Do you think that deleting the resonator could lower the backpressure and move the Torque peak at higher rpm?
Have anybody done this mod?

In theory yes, you might lose some backpressure (but you'd still have the rear silencer I guess) and therefore low rpm torque.
I think the question is, how much torque would you lose and how much you'd notice.

I'm sorry for the useless answer :P

Yes, you are right.
If the loss would be so little to be unnoticable, I'd do this mod anyway.

A friend of mine told me: "The muffler gives more backpressure than the resonator. You already changed the muffler with the GTI's one, which is more empy than the original of your Polo. If you would have lost some torque at low rpm, you certainly should have already noticed it! The resonator delete will affect performance even less. So, go for it!".

But my friend doesn't have my same engine, so he's just talking about theory.
I need to read the experience of who did this same mod. :)

I really don't want to do something and immediately regret it few minutes later. :?

Are you doing it on your own initiative or are you doing it with an exhaust expert? Maybe the expert knows.

I have seen some middle resonators being removed bot nobody was really interested in torque figures I'm afraid.

I'd let an exhaust expert do this mod.

I asked to many experts here in Rome and I received contrasting answers: some said it doesn't affect performance, others said I could loose too much backpressure and torque at low rpm.
But nobody here has already done this mod to my same engine, so no one is really sure about what they say.

I'd like to avoid to make a test, with the risk I could not be satisfied, plus the waste of money and time.

There is no middle silencer in the 6R GTI OEM exhaust system - just a pipe (6Q0253201B). The GTI muffler is designed to give the best result in that way. I have it installed in my blue GT and I find it perfect in all aspects.

The 6R GTI exhaust system has a resonator/middle silencer (6R0253211E).
Image
It's sold as one part with the catalytic converter (6R0254502FX):

My exhaust system is not the 6R GTI complete exhaust system. I have installed only the 6R GTI muffler (6R6253609BA).
The rest of the exhaust system is the original of my Polo.

No you are wrong. Check ETKA. The picture you are referring to is this part 6R0254502FX which is the exhaust pipe with catalyst. This part has a silencer of its own but it is not the middle silencer. As I told earlier I have the system from the catalyst and back installed in my Blue GT.
The exhaust system in the 6R GTI consists of 3 parts:
6R0254502FX
6Q0253201B - this is the part you want to install to replace the middle silencer, and it will fit the exhaust pipe with catalyst 6R0254503AX (in your Blue GT right now). This part has also a silencer of its own but is still not the middle silencer.

And so, what is it if not a resonator/middle silencer? :)

The GTI resonator (6R0253211E) is directly welded to the cat pipe and it's sold as a unique part (6R0254502FX).
Then there is the straight pipe you are talking about (6Q0253201B) and in the end there is the muffler (6R6253609BA).
I even posted a picture of the entire 6R GTI exhaust system.
And it's the same with R WRC exhaust system.

So, in the end the GTI and R WRC exhaust systems have the resonator closer to the cat (welded to the same pipe).
Instead, the other petrol engines exhaust systems have the resonator further from the cat and welded to the same pipe of the muffler.

A friend of mine just gave the resonator of his 6R GTI to me. I have it in my hands right now. :)

Anyway, this is not the argument of my topic. :)

Is there anybody here on this forum who deleted only the resonator on a 1.2 TSI and can answer my question?

P.S.

You completely misunderstood my question and the subject of this topic.
I DON'T have a BlueGT and I DON'T want to install a 6R GTI straight pipe (6Q0253201B), which is Ø55mm.

I have a 1.2TSI engine.
I want to delete the resonator and install a straight pipe of Ø50mm (the same Ø of my original pipe).

O.T.
This is a quick video of the inside of the 6R GTI resonator (6R0253211E):

It is definetely a resonator. :)

Yeah! I thought that too!
The diesel engines have a straight pipe without the resonator (6Q0253201 or 6Q0253201B for Ø50mm).
It could be a straight installation and very easy to reverse in case of problems.

I already installed the 6R GTI muffler.
The video you linked shows the sound of the 6C GTI muffler, which is a bit more metallic than mine.
This is the sound I have right now:

i was under the impression that on a turbo charged car you want as close to 0 back pressure as possible
