Glow plug and engine lights on dashboard

Post by Blacksmoke »

UPDATE:
1. Changed the DPF Differential pressure sensor and it removed almost all of the issues. Slight engine shudder / rough idle was still present.
2. Yesterday replaced all 4 injectors with refurbished ones, bought from EPS Germany at a somewhat reasonable price. No more rough idle / engine shudder.

Everything fixed and running smooth. No DTCs.

Hi everyone
My 2011 Polo 1.6 TDI Bluemotion gave me a puzzle. Any similar experiences or advice are welcome :)

Symptom/error
1. When I turn the ignition on, the glow plugs begin flashing. After engine start, the lamp remains on and flashing.
VCDS = no DTC

Diagnose/action taken
Measured the glow plugs with a multimeter, and all 4 read about .07, .08 ohms @ 200 ohms setting on multimeter (if I remember correctly).
Having read some threads here, checked the brake lights - they are working.
What is going on? Any ideas?

Symptom/error
2. At engine start, yellow engine light on. Does not disappear. Uneven engine idle. No shudder when driving! Start/stop not functioning any more.
On idle, the engine runs uneven and the tacho needle is jumping back an forth only when A/C off!
When I turn the A/C on, the engine runs smooth. :?:
VCDS = 1 Fault Found
7397 - Diesel Particle Filter; Differential Pressure Sensor
P2454 00 [165] - Short to GND
MIL ON - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Readiness: 0 0 0 0 1'

Diagnose/action taken
Cleaned the sensor with air spray for dust. No change. Maybe faulty sensor? https://imgur.com/oQWG8Y8
Visually inspected the vacuum hoses from the sensor to the DPF and could not find breaches...
:?: The question is, could the faulty sensor give uneven engine idle? :?:
What else could cause this?

Might it have something to do with the injectors?
When I turn the A/C on, is there a higher IQ in to compensate for demand? If so, what does it have to do with the uneven idle?

When I check the values in Energy Control, the cylinders have following values:
C1: 0,293%
C2: 0,635%
C3: 0,699%
C4: 0,497%
https://imgur.com/2HU30d3

These values go as high as 0,800%+ on C2 and C3 when the engine has uneven idle.

There is also some "wetness" around injectors 3 and 4, which looks like diesel. Dry area around injectors 1 and 2. https://imgur.com/IsW3uPW

Video of the issue here https://youtu.be/LtaMsX2_A2w

Question 1: Could a faulty copper washer and rubber seal on the injectors 3 and 4 cause this?
Question 2: Given the above, what is the cause of the glow plug and yellow engine lamp, even though there are no other VCDS errors?

Since the finances are a bit tight now, I'd like to get some expert opinions, before I start replacing parts, in hope that it solves the issues...

Looking forward to reading your comments :)

I'd replace the DPF differential sensor. They go bad quite often on these engines.
Given your username and avatar, is your car tuned or stock?

Hi iichel,

Thanks for the reply.
Can a faulty DPF sensor give engine shake and uneven idle?
Will replace the sensor at the start of next month. They are pretty cheap - 25Euro on autodoc.

The car is stock. Recently, I put a single mass flywheel and new clutch from LUK. For some reason, there was installed a DMF before.
Plan on doing a Stage 1 upgrade in the future, closing the EGR to 95% in the process, but I need to figure out if the injectors are ok before that.

yes, the car will go into a safety programme and will have uneven idle and hardly any turboboost.
i'd replace the sensor ASAP to save/protect your DPF.

UPDATE:
Today replaced the DPF differential pressure sensor and cleared the DTCs.

After DTC clearing the engine shake / shudder on idle disappeared.

All lamps on dash off. Took a 7 min trip. So far so good.

Ordered 4x refurbished injectors and will replace all before doing remapping the ECU to +HP.

Will keep you all updated.
